Setting depth micrometers

So I picked up a Mitutoyo 0-75 depth mic, and now I'm having some trouble setting the 25-50 and 50-75 rods, I believe the correct way would be gauge blocks and a surface plate, but however , at home I have neither of these..
Any cheats ways to do it with any accuracy?

How do you know that the rods need 'setting'?

just find any flat surface. 123 blocks, a glass sheet. the deck of an engine block, another machine tool....etc
anything you can verify is flat

Do you have an outside micrometer? Like they said in your thread over at practical machinist, you need an established gauge. As suggested above, a block of steel & sheet of glass would suffice.

A set of three import metric gage blocks isn't that expensive. Wring any two of the blocks together with an offset large enough to land the gauging rod and make your adjustments.
