First time posting on this forum and after reading many posts, I have found insightful. I use a lot of other forum, so I hope to leverage the insight on this forum as well.

A few years ago I started to do DIY projects, with not so much experience prior to my two bathroom remodels, a kitchen remodel, and basement remodel. Then there was also mechanical work on my boat and vehicles. I am more into rough carpentry than fine wood working and I limit my mechanical work to brakes, and other small projects that can be done within a few hours. I don't really don't have enough time I use to as we have toddler that is always trying to find creative ways to get herself killed. As my time is limited to the hours when the toddler is sleeping, I would like to make setup/clean as simple as I can. I am thinking of breaking up my tools into two shops. Currently I have a shop setup in the basement and store most of my tools there as well. It is annoying bringing stuff back and forth.

Garage:Mechanical related items
i.e. socket sets, alen wrenches, torque wrenches, automotive/boat tools, compressor, impact wrench, and etc.
-Store most stuff in 44" HF rolling cabinet that will stow under built in shelves already in place.
-Walls are insulted, but roof is not exposed and space not conditioned
-can fit both current vehicles, might not have room when I get a pickup
-15amp house shared GFCI circuit (lights and power), no easy way to add additional service w/o tearing into finished basement.
Conclusion: I do most boat and car related items in fair Upstate NY weather, so I don't need it in the winter.

Part Unfinished Basement: Woodshop
i.e. Chop saw, drill press, table saw, router, and large work bench
-plenty of power with 2x20amp circuits.
-pain to bring large lumber down

I know I don't use this stuff as much as other people on this forum, though when I do I would like things to be quickly and easily accessible as my time is limited. I wanted to know people's thoughts on having two "shops" in a way. The garage is far from my own space, thought he wife tolerates having stuff stored there when needed. We generally park at least one vehicle in there. The basement is largely 2/3 mine.

Thanks in advance!

i try to keep sawdust far away from anything that produces sparks. :willy_nil

i do most of my wood work in the basement, unless i have a LOT of wood cutting to do for a project outside. my table saw and miter saw are portable enough i can move them to the garage or driveway if i need to.

my garage is small (19x22), ive accumulated a LOT of tools & toolboxes over the past 30 years as a mechanic. i keep most of my machinist tools stored in the basement as well.
nowadays the garage only has 1 full time "resident" and thats my harley. most of the "stuff" gets moved around during the winter to make room for the wifes car, if she needs/wants to park in there.
my trail truck got relegated to outside storage a couple years ago after getting a couple more pieces of shop equipment.

i move corded power tools, (especially drills), back and forth between the house and garage, depending on where they will get used the most. i keep a cordless drill & driver in both places, as well as a small assortment of very basic hand tools in the house...

Other than mountain bikes, my only "toy" is to big for the garage, which is a boat.

Other than screw drives, hammers, and a some basic tools, I don't have a whole lot of overlap. My wife saw the add for HF and the dog eared corner for the 44" cabinet and said I shouldn't be spending money on something like that right now lol. She says that for everything, she is the second most frugal woman in the world, the first being her mom.

I did get some nice LED shop lights from Costco for $25, I mounted two of them and roughed in two outlets powered off the centrally mounted garage light, which has a LED dome light on it. My wife acts if it is a collapsed sun or something, it is so much brighter than what we use to have. Though I think she is getting used to it. I also added in some rails and hooks for all the gardening tools and that has helped a lot. I need to focus on using more of the vertical area. I have some mountain bikes hanging from some hooks, though I want to get them further up. They are low enough to bang my head on.
