settling soil

Hi,

So I got my foundation poured and back filled.

I will wait until spring to pour the floor.

What can I do to make sure the back fill settles appropriately?

Right now I've been "soaking" it. Just with a garden hose and then gently pushing it into the soil...been able to get the hose 2-3 ft deep...do I just pump a ton of water in there every foot or so? Then do I want to muck around in it or just let it settle on it's own?

Anything else I can do without buying/renting tools?

I soaked mine, then the next day drove back and forth tire track to tire track to pack it down. Then repeat occasionally and rake even.

Back fill should have been done in layers and compacted as it was filled.

A WI winters worth of snow will get it plenty wet and it will settle just fine.
If you have a 4x4 and want to drive around on it to pack it down, go for it.
But I doubt it will be needed.
You are going to be putting tamped rock under the slab anyway.

Compactor. Plate style

I have to tear out an area about 24 by 30 feet cause I was too cheap to rent a compactor the firt time. Not looking forward to repouring concrete.
