Shake an' howdy all around. I've been lurking for a while, but thought it time I introduced myself.

Mostly I wrench on General Aviation piston airplanes, but not full time. I know this is a little different corner of tool selection and use than many on here, but still find this a lively and useful forum.

AndrewV, thanks.

I see where my post pointed toward powerplants, but more of what I do is airframe. I'll see what I've got for pix though.

Mostly, these are fairly basic 4- and 6-cylinder aircooled Boxer engines, think big VW, pretty crude 1930's-1950's technology with dual magneto ignition, pretty wide static clearances due to wide range of thermal expansion challenges. Fairly low compression ratios, from 7.20:1 to maybe 8.50:1. Crude up-draught carburetor, or mechanical fuel injection in the higher output applications, manual mixture control for leaning at altitude.

By way of example, a Lycoming 0-540 has six cylinders of 90 cubic inches each(roughly 1.5 litres, or Beetle-engine size). Flat-rated power from 235-300hp at 2575-2700 rpm typical.

Thanks, eh? skywrench
