I just bought a set of MAC screwdrivers with the red hard plastic handles. I wanted green but they don't make it no more. And soon they will stop making the plastic handles just like SO I want those green SO screwdrivers but not bad enough to spend $150US.

Now I just need a SO or Mac hard handle torx set! Anyone?

I though I'd lost my mind when I bought that orange set in unused condition in a pawn shop a couple years ago for $65. Now I guess I'm glad I did!

Mac already has stopped making their hard handles. A co-worker tried to warranty one today on the Mac truck and was handed a "made in slavckia" replacement. He said no thanks and kept his broken one. He says he's going to try and make it useable again on a grinder.

Weird that you want a Mac tool torx set. My matco guy has a hard handle torx set (Mac) that someone traded in on a Matco set and he's trying to sell them now. If you want I'll PM his number to you and you can work it out.

His was a stubby flat blade in red and the Mac guy said he couldn't get them anymore in the old style. YMMV.
Our Mac guy is cool though, he's going to check with the other trucks and see if another Mac dealer has one on his truck for him.

The classic hard handles are all gone You can buy prybars with that handle though I bought a green set with striking caps.

I just listed the part numbers for some of the handles. You would have to find a dealer to buy a blade, or swap it with one of your other screwdrivers.

OK, I need someone to educate me on this. I am not a professional wrench. I do get that Snapon has successfully marketed that they make superior tools. I get it. Here is what I do not get: these are screwdrivers. That's all, screwdrivers for $150.

I make a real nice living but I find it real hard to justify $150 or more for an 8 piece set of screwdrivers. Really, this is not a complex tool.

Now I think if you want to have a $150 set of screw drivers that is great I am not condemning that. I just do not understand what makes them worth it.

I hear on the news everyday how terrible the economy is, then I see folks paying $150 for 8 screwdrivers and it does not add up.

Let me be clear on this one point. I am a firm believer that you should buy the things you can afford and want in life and I do not care. My question is what makes these screwdrivers worth so much? Hell maybe I need a set and just don't know it yet.

For the record I use an old set of Craftsman tools. I have been tempted to buy some HF sockets but I decided to stay with Craftsman. I am a hobby guy that rebuilds old trucks and motorcycles.

Here's the funny thing about conspicuious consumption. Folks don't REALLY want hard handles. They want things that are expensive and they want things that are hard to get. They also want things that convey a sense of status. In this weird subculture, brand new plastic handled screw drivers are a status symbol. If it was actually about the efficacy of the screw driver, every one would just by the Williams hard handles. But they don't.

SO gets this and knows that if they went through the trouble of reissueing the hard handles folks would buy them for a week or so and then start bitcihng about the out dated and uncomfortable handles.

Another perspective: Sal Glesser, inventor and President of Spyderco knives, is a pretty shrewd businessman. Spyderco often makes models for several years and when interest and sales wane, those are discontinued in favor of newer models. Sal is constantly begged by collectors and forum members to bring back certain discontinued models. His reply has always been "We have to remember that we discontinued these models for a reason - and there's no faster road to bankruptcy than bringing back things that weren't selling the first time around."

I sell the individuals weekly. most guys just buy the handle and put it on a screwdriver blade that they destroyed.
snap on listens they know what you guys want and other dealers are saying the same. not enough yet, but they know.

there was a new in package set of 8 orange hard handle snap on screwdrivers last week that sold for $280.

thats almost a 200% increase from when i got my set for christmas a few years ago.

Probably weren't bad sellers as such but the market would be limited to folks who didn't already have them. Assuming a 40 year average career that means SO will only be able to sell a long established basic product to 1/40th of their customer base each year. Bringing out a new and improved product opens up the possibility of sales to the other 39/40ths.

When it comes to collectors, there really is no practicality involved. The screwdriver will be worth where supply and demand intersect.

I highly doubt that the new owner will start wrenching with them. They'll end up being toolbox jewelry for the new owner and he'll probably use HF screwdrivers for everyday use.

At the Napa store I worked at in the early 80's I recall we had 3 or 4 sets of Chinese screwdrivers that were copies of the Snap-On black hard handles. They had been sitting on the shelf for quite a while, I think they were priced at something like $9.95. One day when cleaning shelves up a bit the boss made a sign, "on sale $49.95". I think we sold all we had that day...go figure!!

I ended up selling 4 tool boxes monday at one stop because our manager showed up with a truck full of them. we made a deal on one and people started showing up to see what was going on... excitement creates the need/want to buy something. also do you wake up in the morning thinking " I am going to buy a new box today"

i didn't realize the hard handles were a bad seller.

And I didn't mean to imply that they were a bad seller, just that products run their course and when they start to get dated and sales drop off, companies bring out new models to re-arouse interest, just like car companies do every year.

What if snap on decided to release them again but along side of the instincts. Then people could have the best of both worlds.
