Most of my drawers are shallow--and I prefer them that way. Maybe its because that was all I knew growing up, but I really don't like junk-catching deep drawers.

Screwdrivers fit fine. I don't like wrench racks. Tried them and hated them; I prefer to lay wrenches flat. I also prefer pliers and adjustable wrenches laid flat--I don't like the vertical holders. I'd bet that two of my two inch drawers hold just as much as one 4" drawer would if I used racks, so really no loss of space. Tap and die set fits in one drawer. So do most of my small engine specialty tools. And precision tools--micrometers, calipers, squares, etc. Sockets and ratchets too--tried standing them up, didn't like it. I prefer them laying down in a shallow drawer. Chisels, punches, scrapers, even prybars. I need very, very few drawers of the 4" or 6"+ persuasion.

But I'm weird compared to most people on here--I don't like 5' long drawers with 200lbs of tools in them either. But I don't work against the clock.

I just used one of my smaller shallow drawers fof commonly used or needed nuts, bolts, fitings and such. Actually very useful as opposed to searching in the parts bins waay across the shop.

I think there is certainly a place for square inches over cubic inches but obviously the best boxes give a solid mix of both. I personally love my 6 shallow KRL drawers. Perfect for organizing handled tools like screwdrivers, picks, prybars, files and the like. My box doesn't have the 2nd full width wrench drawer but I have managed to get all my wrenches in there.

Depends on how many blow molded cases you have. Shallow drawers are great if you shadow foam everything. They are maybe not so great if you need to store tools in intermediary cases or racks provided by third parties. So in part its about organizational aids as much as anything.

I don't see alot of wasted space up above or in post #42 fwiw.

Lots of valuable advice, thanks folks!

Just to clarify, when I said I don't find shallow drawers useful, I didn't mean all of them. It's just that my box has too many! Of course I made use of some of them - screwdrivers, ratchets, extensions etc etc. Plenty of stuff perfectly suitable for shallows... I just wish my 7023 had a couple more of the deeper ones. Maybe I'll buy them some day from SO.

I'm in Europe so no swap meets sorry!

Thanks Jake, you inspired me to check it for myself. Much to my surprise, the Techwrenches will clear in a 2" drawer (just barely, but reliably at all drawer openings), as will the flat wrenches I have in a rack (nothing above 22mm at the moment, roughly 30° from vertical). I thought it would be too tight.

Not that it changes anything for me at the moment, but I am thinking about adding another box and I could possibly make use of this at that time.

My box is made up almost entirely of 2in tall drawers. I store screwdrivers, extensions, ratchets, prybars, punches, electrical testers. Pretty much everything except sockets, air and cordless tools, hammers and pullers fit in them. My wrenches above 1" and 24mm have to get stored flat but I can live with that

Anyone have a link to the snap on side where the individual drawers are sold? I would like to price them. I have a 4 inch narrow drawer I would like to swap out with two narrow 2 inch drawers
