Shallow middle tool box or alternative.

I need some more shallow drawer space and I'm looking for another middle drawer set to put on the shelf under my work bench. I have 36" of width and about 18" of depth but only 8" vertically. I found a Kennedy drawer set that will fit but it's not very deep.

Any ideas on a shallow (probably 2-drawer) set that will fit? If not a middle box, what other kind of storage?

Thanks in advance.

8" is pretty short for most of the available middle chests like Craftsman. An option may be to build a single drawer and add slides. That may be the best way to maximize the 36" width and limited height.

Our local CL is selling a wooden single drawer box some guy had built to use as a riser.

Wood is something I hadn't considered but it's definitely an option.

I see that sunnex has stackable add-on drawers for their tech cart that seem like they would work great. I might be able to fit two of them on top of one another.

Snap on has made nice 2 drawer units in the past, but they seems to be a little too large at 40x20x9"

There are single drawer units meant to be bolted beneath industrial work benches. They seem to measure about 7 x 16 x 20. Two side by side may be an option. Check ebay.com, they may have shorter ones.

Kennedy currently makes a middle chest that's pretty close to the dimensions you're looking for but there may be older models that are a better fit. I would say that they are your best bet simply because they're more readily available than other manufacturers.

As an example, this Kennedy middle chest is on eBay. The seller says it's 9-1/2" high.

Kennedy actually has one that's just under 8 inches as well but it's only just over 9 inches deep. That's a little too much wasted depth for me.

I'm now looking at doing a couple of these global industrial drawers side by side or two of the wider sunnex drawers stacked
