i am hoping vintage air craft panels will be in my near future, so i hope to be able to keep adding to this thread

been working on some air plane parts the past couple days. i am teaching a class for a couple guys from the US air force museum Wright Patterson restoration department so i wanted to get familiar with some air craft stuff

going to make some pieces for a B-17 bomber engine cowl

making the paper patter



after some shrinking and stretching





after some blending and and forming









shining up nice while working on planishing the panel out



working on a little reverse curve section of a wing fairing

Given the amount of labor I like the airplane parts vs the tire cover,,, if it pays full shop rate then either is good. This shaping is a specialty which aids in marketing. It looks like it could be slow and tedious.

Nice, most of the tools were seemingly MADE to make airplane parts originally anyway... Cool making parts for the B17 is awesome not too many of them left flying, are you making these for a static model or a flyer??

It is an art.....

Part of the problem....tooling way back then was not of the same standard as it is now.

Back then, parts were formed and final fit was done on the plane.
