Shapsmith 11" Bandsaw Value Opinions

I am trying to build a budget-minded woodworking shop and one of the many tools I would like to add is a bandsaw. I found an 11" bandsaw at a local second hand store for $115. It has its own stand-alone stand, motor, and belt. Is this a reasonable price?

I would like to begin my woodworking hobby with some smaller pieces like Greene & Greene style picture frames, cases, or other bungalow/Arts and Crafts style.

It can handle up to 6" thick pieces of wood for resawing, and seems to be well constructed. Does this seem like a good step in the direction I'm trying to go?

I'm thinking it might be underpowered for resawing, but get it if nothing else is available. You can always sell it later if you get a larger one. The most important tool is your determination and your desire to build something beautiful and well made. I'd keep watching your local CL and buy machines as you need them.

A 11-inch saw will have small wheels and will only accommodate very thin blades due to the small bending radius. And the blade tension might be limited as well. Doubtful you will find quality resaw blades of that type.

As already noted, look for a bigger saw, at least 14-inch.

The Shopsmith saw is well built, but too small for resawing. If you're just wanting a hobby saw it might be OK. Keep in mind that blades and parts will be more expensive than the more common brands.

I've owned a couple of Shopsmiths over the years, but didn't like the time it took to switch from one process to the next. I will say that it made a great drill press for wood when you configured it for that option.

Look for a Delta 14" for around $100.00-$150.00.
Or A delta Clone.
there is one here for $50.00, But I think it;'s gone.
Pittsburgh Craigslist.Yeah Its Gone.
It was A killer deal.
I have A wood only one, and a wood metal one stays set up for metal.
Both 14" Deltas.
Sound saws, easy to get parts for.
there was A nice higher end Grizzly on there for $150.00 Too.

Rarely will you find an old Delta in good shape for $100, but the clones can be pretty good deals. I bought this Jet "clone" with riser block, Carter guides, and a stack of blades for $100 a few months ago.
