"sharing" shop space / new garage build planning

So after spending the better part of 8 years in a falling down 1.5 car detached garage, my wife finally asked if it was time to build a real attached garage.

No problem. I've always wanted to do it but time and finances are finally in the realm of possibility.

I can only go 30ft wide due to lot setbacks. Depth is up for discussion. I had always assumed I'd build essentially 2 30x30 spaces (30x60 overall) with a garage door between to get big projects in and out. I get the back half for a shop (wood & metal & dirtbikes & whatever else walks in) and the front half for a lift, the cars (maybe, we park outside now and don't mind) and various kid stuff that invariably piles up.

I usually go away for 3-5 days at a time for work and come back to a wall of kid/wife stuff piled across the doorway, the entire width of the garage 3 ft deep. If I'm not home nothing gets put away. I know I need to make it easy to store stuff so it actually gets put away. I also want/need somewhere I can get stuff done. Any suggestions on layout or anything else to optimize the space. Separate sheds in the backyard won't work.

I plan to do ICF and was thinking to keep noise down for the neighbors I may got all the way to the roof. I was thinking 12 ft ceilings but 16ft or other is not out either.

So if you had a blank slate what would you do?

I am subscribing to this thread because I have a similar situation (although smaller spot) and the problem that I am having is saw dust... My garage has a 14x22 shop at the back half and anytime I do any wood work, the fine dust that gets kicked into the air ends up landing on the cars and frustrating me.

sooo
30x60 with a full wall with an overhead door....

i'd suggested you put a man door in that wall as well

i like to keep woodwork separate from anything else. sawdust gets everywhere. :shocking:

with what you have planned, you could keep your "stuff" in the back half, let the wife/kids pile up their "stuff" in the front half...

my wife does the same thing, she has a habit of not putting anything away when she's done with it. about once a week i have to clear out yard tools from the garage and put them back in the shed...
