Another thread made me think about this.

Sharpie markers, does anybody NOT them or use them in their garage ?

Any specific color or tip ?

I have many of them, from a multi-color pack. A few black and red ones. The majority of them are regular tips (fine)while a couple are ultra fine tips.

I keep a purple one in my tool belt as I have found purple tends to show up everywhere and not blend in like black does sometimes. Most people don't want purple either so I don't worry about it "walking" off.

So what do you use in your garage, shop or at work ?

I have Sharpie markers all over the place. I use them more than my kids use their markers. They are really good to have in the kitchen for labeling packages for the freezer.

Tip: When not in use, store them with cap on and tip down.
They'll last longer and not dry out until empty.

I like em too!

I use all the colors, I'm not picky.....but for laying out lines and marking steel for welding, it's hard to beat soapstone.

I use the black and silver on steel for bending/cutting all the time. Fine tips. I'd use the silver more, but I can't find them in the big multi-packs like the black ones at Sams.

I use sharpies some but rely on paintmarkers more. Mostly yellow or white for visibility. There are plenty of colors available and you can remove the paint easily with brake cleaner.

I use the silver most, but do more metal marking with soapstone or a scribe.
Brake cleaner will remove it, but so will alcohol. Sharpie is shellac based.

Red for steel, and black for everything else, must have 50 of them from my last place of employment. They would get left in my pocket.

Make great acid resist for circuit board etching. Same thing that comes in the etching kits at half the cost.

I keep a standard black one clipped in my pocket next to my pocket knife at all times. For marking out steel I prefer a silver colored pencil, I buy them by the case.

Not all sharpies are the same, a lot of the goofy colors will not work writing on metal, they act like a washable Crayola magic marker.

So you've stolen from your employer?! The world is doomed, you'll be going to hell, and I'm pretty sure your orange juice in the fridge just expired too... :lol_hitti Sorry, it'd be said sooner or later!

I have sharpies all over myself, and yes... some are even from my employer :spit:. I normally just use the regular one's since they hold up to the abuse better than the ultra fine tip ones. I think I'm the only guy at work who carries one religiously. Never know when someone might want my autograph... oh and they are handy for writing info on equipment too

When I was a tinner and everyone had a sharpie, I always tried to carry a different color. Now I typically carry black or blue, and have a silver one not too far away for the rare occasion it's needed.

I use them all of the time and have a selection of colors. Most of the ones that I have are with a medium tip. I have a couple of fine tips too.

I use the super fine tips constantly for layouts on aluminum.

I keep a regular black and regular silver with me any time I go to a concert, or other place, where I might get autographs.

My wife keeps a black and a silver sharpie in her purse, in case I need to sign autographs (I do get the occasional person who recognizes me from this season's MasterChef).

I too like and use the purple. I like the green also.

A real wide sign maker's Sharpie works good when doing bodywork or metal shaping. Mark up the surface and hit it with a Vixen file. Low spots stay marked. Bring 'em up and repeat.

Or a sanding block and sand paper.

The only downside of using a sharpie compared to a paint marker, is that they fade in the sun. If you write the heat numbers on lengths of stainless pipe with a sharpie, the writing magically disappears when under the sun.

I use soap stone as it doesnt burn up when heat is applied and you can always have a sharp tip. When I do use a sharpie, silver is what I like best.
If I am laying out a drawing I always use a fresh ultra fine to make the part outlines pop!

I only use the thick ones, the fine ones, the black ones, red ones, green ones and red ones.
I have Sharpies everywhere. Every drawer, toolbox, car, bag, you name it, there is a sharpie or two in it.

Started carrying one when we started making our own bodies for the race car, now i don't leave home without it, also use it for marking on the back of my lowes gift cards so i know if there still good. The best use is when the guy who drives the car uses it when a little kid wants his autograph.

I keep these in my tool bag. As long as the tip doesnt get crushed they are awesome. Wide tip and they are oval shaped so they won't roll away.

Way too many uses.

I keep silver for metal/glass, black for writing box contents, and orange for construction work since it shows up easily in low light. All fine tip.

I'm glad to see a few others use purple for the same reason. I told somebody once why I used purple and they looked at me like I was cuckoo.

Try a craft store like Hobby Lobby or Micheal's. Some have posted about purple - I never thought about that! At work my black ones keep walking away and purple may just cure that!

I have lots of Sharpies and other permanent markers. I use the huge (1" diameter aluminum shell, about 6" long) Marks-A-Lot markers as a form of layout dye when marking metal. Just scribble around the area needing work until it's a solid color and scribe away. Great for small work or isolated areas on larger pieces. Also great for color-coding wire. Those big markers are the old-school, non-safety solvent (they use acetone) type that really hold up. I keep red and black ones in my electrical tool belt for coloring the white conductors in Romex/BX when they are used as hot wires. Plus the smell reminds me of my childhood when permanent markers practically made you loopy from the fumes.

I buy the multicolor assortments of Sharpies for all kinds of tasks. Great for color coding stuff while disassembling, especially when there is no room to write a number or other coding on a piece. The silver ones do a passable job of replacing the "chrome" that wears off of raised letters on various items. The multicolor sets can be used to duplicate an IEC color code on items too small to number, yet need a specific multi-digit identification. The list goes on. I'm addicted to 'em. And not because of the smell either. ;)
