Shars Drill Press Chuck

I just replaced all the bearings and installed an mt 2 quill in a powermatic 1150 drill press. It's was getting sloppy and I found an mt2 quill on ebay. Ended up getting a shars keyless chuck off Amazon and was surprised it came with a calibration certificate, wether it's bs or not the chuck runs true and is easy to open and close. It's the second tool I've bought from shars and they seem to make decent quality for the price point. I wouldn't hesitate to buy something else from them, anyone else buy from shars? How was the quality?

I have not used them yet, I bought my only replacement chuck from MSC, great service.

I have a handful of Shars items. It seems like they fill the gap left when the Enco brand went away; better than Harbor Freight, similar to the MSC “Import” or “Value” range but slightly more consistent, decent quality but still a step down from the major brands. They’re great for DIY and hobby machinist projects.

I have a two boring bars for my lathe and two boring bar kits for my 5/8 and 3/4" boring heads. The bars for my lathe have been great and the ones for my mill are better than the dirt cheap ones.

I wish they wouldn’t include those calibration certificates. Just be honest with us and don’t insult our intelligence.

No inspection was done. The Chinese manufacturer doesn’t have access to the relevant DIN. There is no “operator 01”.

That could be a good chuck. The spindle might be well made. But there’s absolutely zero quality involved.

Shars is standard hit or miss Chinese merchandize. Glad you got lucky this time. My advice is to conduct the inspection properly. If it looks good, I’d diassemble it, clean, deburr, polish, re-Lube and re-assemble.

With respect, you’re not watching the channels I watch. I don’t think Shars is well regarded. I’ve seen some folks inspect the golden goose chucks and report they are better than expected. But they are far from well made or quality.

I‘ve seen several machinists say their Eastern European stuff is pretty good. Polish and Czech stuff isn’t half bad.

I figure for a drill press if there is no visible runout I'm ok, it feels smooth and the bit looks straight. The cert I guess is supposed to make you feel better?

I have a "Chinese" chuck (Taiwan) from precision matthews and an albrecht. Neither has any real runout to speak of but if you put a tenths indicator on them, the PM is actually slightly better. For an old drill press I paid $500 for, I don't know if I would spend another $500 on the Albrecht.

Theres a lot of hate for new Jacobs chucks as well. I have old ones which are generally good, but a good spindle, well fit is essential.
