She went and cracked the sink!

My wife dropped something dense and heavy in the undermount sink on her end of the bathroom vanity, and she done cracked it good. Its a white ceramic sink from Menards, bought new back in 2018. So, add another item to my "honey do" list. Stuff happens, but I am surprised how easily it cracked, and how much it cracked. I can actually feel it cracked fully through the bowl, and I can probably push my hand through it with moderate effort.

So, anyone else experience something similar? I thought fired ceramic sinks were far less fragile than this.

Had a pedestal bathroom sink, dropped a ceramic dog water bowl and it cracked the sinkbowl. Clear through there was a hole in the sink. The dog bowl survived. Seems to be made of the same material as a toilet. Hit those just right and you can break them easily, when I replaced a toilet in the past, I just smashed it to pieces with a hammer to dispose of it.

Sounds like another good reason to buy tools.

Do yourself a favor...test the shut-off valve behind the toilet. If the bowl gets cracked, you're gonna wanna know that valve works, or at least know where the shut-off is in the basement (?) for that bathroom group.

My wife did the exact same thing (although she keeps telling me one of the kids did it). This happened a few years ago. Luckily it just caused a hairline crack along the sink but it didn't go all the way through so it didnt cause any sort of leak or water issue. I have no idea how I'd even go about changing just the sink. In my case I think I'd need to buy a whole new vanity

My father in law cracked their ceramic sink (drop in style) by pouring in a pot of boiling water (in an attempt to clear the pipes).

Do not feel bad, have a double sink, neither side is capable of having hot water (not boiling) in it. Both sinks have a million cracks, luckily only one leaks. Trouble is it is epoxied to the underside of the engineered granite top. Brilliant engineering, a kitchen sink which can't handle hot water.

Yep, did the same thing a year after remodeling out bathroom. Dual sink vanity. Wife’s side has a short wall she like to keep a heavy *** candle in a glass jar sitting on top of. About 20” above the sink. Candle got bumped in the middle of the night going to the bathroom and went through the sink.
Went back to Lowes or HD and bought another. Installed it and about two hours later we noticed it was the wrong color. Didn’t match the old one. Apparently we bought “bone” and I bought “antique white”. FML.
Had to go to a specialty shop and order a new old stock since it was discontinued.

The part that really pissed me off was I told her to quit putting that candle up on the damned wall like it belonged there 24/7.

Heh, heh. Just after my then girlfriend (now wife of five years) moved into my house, first the clothes washer gave up the ghost, soon followed by the dishwasher. I installed a new motor and tub bearings/seals in the washer and replaced the Kenmore dishwasher with a good used refurbbed unit.

Things were quiet until the sink incident. I'm pretty sure i can get the same sink at Menards. Just a matter of IF I can replace the undermount sink without having to take the 85" long vanity top off to mount the replacement sink.

Ceramic is awesome for breaking other ceramic or glass. Ever watch a homeless guy break a car window? They use a coffee cup or the ceramic off a spark plug.

I was a plumber for 40+ years. I’ve been amazed many times at how fragile porcelain/ceramic fixtures are. I’ve been just as amazed, just as many times at how hard of a lick it can take without damage.

IME; can be very fragile and totally unpredictable

One of my old coworkers had a good story of how one of the work toilets snapped off it’s base while he was sitting on it. He’s a big dude and he bent over to wipe and *CRACK!!*, big mess on the floor and he had to go home and change lol.

Look underneath. If it is held on with fasteners and metal sink clips, if should be an easy swap.
Your back will thank you in the morning after you are done playing contortionist.

Sinks are typically low-fired ceramic and thus not very strong.
We went to mostly stainless sinks, but you can't drop anything into them either.

When we were building our house my dad was helping install a faucet in the powder room. We dropped one of the handles from the faucet and cracked the brand new bowl.

When I called the countertop supplier, they said they get calls every week to replace a cracked sink.
