Shear Question

Hey Guys,

I’m putting up a 22x24 garage next month.

I plan to have an 18’ garage door, leaving 2’ on both sides. From what I’ve read, this is fine, but I need to account for shear.

Would simply a layer of 3/4” on the exterior solve this issue, or should I think in another direction?

I live in northern MN, so earthquakes are a non issue, but heavy snow load needs to be considered.

Thanks in advance.

I believe the major worry is found in new homes with exterior gypsum offering minimal wall strength. Add lag bolts to the bottom plate, ties to the roof rafters from the top plate. 3/4" should offer good wall strength, use deck screws for fastening, hell of a lot better than gypsum or even 1/2" ply sheathing.
