Sheathing in garage

Greetings:
I am replacing the original paneling and I see black sheathing as shown that was not installed when the one story ranch was built in 1975. Curious as to why it was left off the corners.

The black sheathing is probably tentest. The corners were done on plywood to prevent racking of the framing. A lot of houses built in the 70's amd 80's were done like this. Cheaper than using plywood everywhere.

Definitely tentest. It's a soft fiberboard. It isn't used so much now as osb seems to be the preferred sheathing material.

I found similar on the attached garage when we tore off the vinyl siding of our 1987 build home.

Around here it was simply called “celotex” or celotex board. The corners were done in plywood to provide shear strength / prevent racking. Plywood was generally called for within 2 feet of every window/ door opening. The rest was infilled with celotex. Quite popular in the 70’s / 80’s as the builder could save a few hundred $ on each house when compared to using plywood everywhere. I always thought it was ******, sort of “the least you could do”.

I think there was some asbestos litigation 20 or so years ago involving celotex. Yay one more thing I used to work with that had asbestos in it.

Celotex was the standard sheathing used in Anchorage, Alaska during the 1950's. Many low budget projects were built and occupied with the Celotex exposed, until the budget allowed the final sheathing.

I agree. One of our houses had that **** in the triangle on the gable end. We always had problems w/ the wind pulling the vinyl siding off because nails don't grab into it well at all.
