Shed addition

As I have decided to not build a garage for a while I really need to extend my shed. My orginal thought as to put an extension on one end. My wife shot that down. So now I have to add onto the back. My question is on the roof. Right now the 8x12 shed had about a 4/12 pitch roof facing the front and back. If I add on to the back I will need a flatter roof like 2/12 and I'm wondering how to join them..should I extend the existing roof and make if flatter or should I join the new roof.to the wall under the existing roof so they overlap? I will try to add some pics tonight to illustrate what I mean. Thanks

Maybe you should have your wife design it. Talk to her about snow loads on a 2:12.

Sounds to me like you need to build a gable end at right angles to the existing roof. This is from another thread:

With a three tab roof you don't want to go less than 4/12 (most manufacturers recommend at least 3/12). So, the BEST solution is the reverse gable like Zeke mentioned. The only other alternative is a shed roof- but you'd have to start it at the ridge and at the minimum pitch of 3/12 you're not going to add a lot of covered space with at least 7' of headroom.

Not to worried about headroom really just need storage space for bikes power wheels etc so I can gain my small workbench back for working on outboards etc

Make it at least twice as big as you think. Then maybe it will end up near big enough.

Yeah the issue is the hill behind the shed. If I had a level Yard I would move this shed further back and build an oversize shed workshop. But I cant rally do that because of the hill. So instead I need a little more storage so I can at least walk into the shed and grab my tools. Right know I'm thinking of going 5-6' out the back with a 3/12 or 4/12 roof this should leave enough room to walk against the existing wall while using the short side for bikes kids toys etc. Now I just need to set aside some time and a little cash for materials. I think I will mock up the roof line and see what it looks like this weekend.

Move the shed forward then make the rear larger. I say do this and incorporate the idea of the gable roof as previously mentioned but make the outer walls the same width as the shed now as you're looking at it.
