I was thinking of building a shed attached to the back of my garage to create some more wall space to store stuff. Anybody ever do this?

I did exactly that. Thank of an enclosed lean-to sort of. I wrapped around the back corner of my detached garage, with an L-shaped shed. I did have to clean out the ground of rock and dirt and prep a pretty large area to pour concrete, that was the most expensive part. About 8 yards of concrete were used. Since I did not want to get into any permit hassles, it is self-supporting, only lagged into the garage to keep them together, not structural with the garage. It is built with 4x4 posts on 4 ft centers, then used plywood to enclose it. Roof is standard joists and shingled. The inside wall of the L shape is the outside of the garage wall. I got some used industrial shelving and have that rather than shelves mounted to the garage wall. I ended up with about 400 sq ft of nice shed storage by maximizing a lot of previously wasted space. I also put my air compressor in there so it is quiet in the garage. Just popped a small hole through the wall for power and air line to get through.

Yep, I did it. I did not want anything that was "yard" related to be in the garage so I designed this to hold that stuff. It has water, multiple plugs for battery chargers, and also has air for the mower tires. I also mounted the compressors for my split A/C systems under the deck. It's 9 X21 and one of my better ideas!
Mine is adjacent to the house, but close to the garage:
It's nice to have a place to store the stuff non-garage people think belongs in a garage.

It's great for "outside" storage. If I have a driving rain with high winds the stuff next to the lattice can get wet but I store nothing there. I never have liked storing yard equipment in an enclosed room. Since it's 9 ft+ high, I use the upper area, just under the roof, to store lumber and such. In hind sight I should have installed my compressor out there.
With that being said, it wasn't designed to keep things dry. The main goal was to have a vented area to store outside stuff.

I'm starting my shed planning now too, would love to see some more ideas/pics.
In my case, one shed will be next to my basketball court to hold trikes, balls, skateboards, "driveway toys" etc. One will be on the backside of the barn to hold garbage can, recycle can. And the largest will be on the front of the barn for the kids ride on toys, and "yard toys".

Old railway sleepers are often used over here as bases for sheds. The wood will have been soaked in diesel fuel and oil over the years so should last well.
I have a 6'x8' lean-to style enclosed shed build off the back of the garage. It has the compressor and water heater in it. It's one of the best things I did since you can't hear the compressor anymore. You have to stop talking and listen carefully to realize it's running instead of being forced to stop talking until it stops running.

I did this as well along the side wall of our garage in our carport. I built it out from the wall right to the edge of the overhanging roof just before the gutters. Didnt have to roof it myself this way. Just built a frame out with 2x4s and sheeted with OSB.added some doors shelves and locks and its great for storing materials (steel,wood, etc)
