Shed build

Well since my garage/shop build was going to have to wait (see intro thread:

I needed to build a shed so I could use my attached garage for working on my jeep. So I though I would start a thread that shows the build of my shed this summer/fall. So here we go...

I had to cut a few trees to make it fit. Used a little child labor. ...framed the outer floor and squared it up...marked and dug peer holes and concreted peers in...finished the floor joist and decked the floor...built 2 walls and stood them up...

more walls up, then squared up the walls and put up some osb to hold in place...made a jig to build roof rafters...put 3 up and ridge run to hold in place, then built the rest of rafters..put in some attic decking, then the roof deck..finally closed in the side walls...

framed out and put in soffet vented vinyl...used pvc on soffet and garage door trim for low maintenance...garage door and people door up...siding went up pretty quick...interior floor ready for paint and interior ready for shelves...

built shelve on the end with space to put table saw and compound miter underneath on the sides...workbench in the middle, with peg board on the wall (i really like peg board because of ease of access and visual of where things are)...my dad was out and helped finish off and move stuff out..filled it up quick...ran electrical for lights and little power...built ramp for garage door and landing for people door...finished...

Man I got a lot of **** out of my garage and all accessible in the shed...

Shed size is 12'x16'...standard 8' walls...7'x8' garage door...used siding that matched the house...tucked it into the trees...

I really like the way it turned out.

Looks great ! I just got my shop built and we planned on having space inside for our yard stuff , bicycles etc. But now were thinking shed also .

Thanks! I'm getting ready to build something similar. My 30' x 40' shop building is full of non-shop stuff, i.e., lawn mower, pool supplies, furtilizer spreader, ad nausium. I need the space to build hot rods!

Did you make this yourself or did it come as a kit?
I really, really like the look of it and it would be almost perfect for the tiny amount of available space I have (currently have a one of those nasty sectional concrete things which are very common in the UK)

I sketched it out and did this myself. The dimensions I used were all to keep things simple. Using very simple multiples of 4x8. I've done this before with a 12' x 20' and helped a friend build his 12' x 12'. All makes for easy precut dimensional lumber. Floor joist were 12' 2x8s w/16' down the side. Floor deck was 4x8 3/4 ply cut a couple of pieces in half to off set the seams. Walls were standard stud length 2x4s w/ 12' and 16' 2x4 top and bottom plates. Walls were 4x8 sheets of OSB (no cuts except around the doors and the gables). Roof was designed to be 8' so used 4x8 ply only cutting in 1/2 again to off set seams. The roof is also tall enough that I have loft space for even more storage. Makes it all pretty simple. Of course, I did a lot of finish work that isn't required on a shed, but I like to look as finished as the house.

So this could easily be done for 8x8, 8x12, 12x12, 12x16, 12x20 etc..

I wish I could have made it 12x20, however we have a max limit on outbuilding square footage. Measured by a percentage of the house. So with the plan for my 25x40 garage/shop, this was the biggest I could do. I may put a lean to roof across the back in order to store some things partially out of the weather. That would not count against my square footage.

Yes I have access to the attic area. You can see it a little in this picture. Toward the back I left 'open' 1 rafter joist leaving a 4' space in the rafters to access large items. Toward the front is decked with 2 4x8 sheets of OSB in the back (over the workbench) is 1 4x8 sheet of OSB.

Nice job on your shed. This is what I started my work with (same dimensions as yours too). It was one of the reasons we bought the place, so I could have somewhere to work on things besides the carport hooked to the house. I think yours looks a lot better than mine.

It makes a good place to keep things now since I have the shop built.

If I could ask about how much in materials? I have wanted to do a 12 x 16 with a garage door just like yours. I already built an 8 x 8 for yard stuff. Need a bigger one for rider mower, edger and wagon.

Very nice , makes my little 6 x 9 woodshed look like, well a shed! Gives me inspiration though to build a bigger one so I can move the mower etc out of the ground floor of the house so I can then convert it into more living space eventually. Just out of interest how long did it take you to build it?

It has been awhile so I'm not sure if I remember correctly but I think about $1000 in materials. Most of that is the vinyl siding and I used PVC fascia boards (expensive) but I wanted a no maintenance building.

A thousand bucks +/- and some sweat equity doesn't seem like to bad of a price to pay for a nice looking building of that size .
I either need to move the shed I have to a better location on my property or build a new and bigger one where I want it.

That is great , 192 square feet of super storage, looks like a million bucks, and not a lot of wasted materials by using standard dimension lumber.

That is about 5.20 sq foot for materials, if I ran the calculator right

192 x 5.20 equals 998.40.

Plus your labor as a fine carpenter.

I can build up to 144 sq ft w/o permit and hope to do so soon to clean some more "stuff" out of garage.
