Hi Guys, I really hate adding to the already growing number of floor coating threads on here but I can't seem to find much carryover info that will be relevant here in Oz.

I'm very keen to see what options I have to coat my freshly poured slab (so fresh it hasn't actually been poured yet). I know that I'll need to let it cure for at least a month and during this month I'll probably park cars, trailers etc in it and being winter it'll get muddy.

Ideally I'd love to have a painted finish, preferably in the standard warehouse/workshop grey as I do like that look.

Use: The area being concreted is 9m x 12.6m (roughly 30' x 40') and makes up half of my shed. The area will be used mainly for a workshop for working on cars, tractors and general construction of items required on a hobby farm (building gates, repairing things etc). I''ll be welding in an area of the shed which I'm happy to have fire blankets to protect the painted surface. I'll also have an area setup for painting and prep work. As well as benches and storage areas, small althe, drill press etc.

The driveway is compacted rubble so cars driving in will bring in small rocks, dirt and mud however I plan to eventually move the daily drivers into another area in the future (but for now they'll take up space on the slab)

I've looked at 2 pack epoxy products over here like: http://www.cavco.com.au/ http://www.2packepoxy.com.au/ but would like to find out if anyone has used their products before?

An assistance is greatly appreciated.
Scott.

Thanks HOTFR8. The more I think of it the more I wonder if its better to just epoxy the designated 'Workshop' area where cars, welding/grinding and other detrimental activities won't take place. Jsut foot traffic, home brewing and storage.

You could always do as I did. Plenty of second hand carpets and matting as that is great when you drop something as it does not get damaged (painted items) bolts land and do not roll away and if you get dirt or oil on them just start over. Plenty of carpet places and thrift / bargain shops have old mats.

I have seen some painted floors with heavy traffic soon lose the paint and get covered in tyre skids.

I've done the carpet trick in a rental and didn't like it tbh. I agree it stops you damaging things and you rarely lose bolts but I just don't like the grotty carpet look.

Unfortunately I've got my vision set on an industrial/warehouse look with grey floors and green machinery/equipment :)

Hey Scott, I painted my slab grey before I put anything on it - I neutralised the fresh concrete with plain old vinegar (the plastic 2 litre bottles from the supermarket are very cheap).
The paint was fairly cheap too, I think the brand was "White Knight" (it was about 15 years ago).

It has lasted pretty well - there are a few scratches, etc. where I've dragged heavy objects and quite a few burn marks from welding and grinding.

The only place that some small patches (a couple of inches long) have flaked off is outside the door - and that is probably because I added SAND between coats (no I didn't sand it - I sprinkled sand on it near the door, to make it non-slip).

Scott, if you are just looking for a tough solid colour two pack epoxy, try Jotun Jotacote. I did my front two bay garage in it a few years ago and it has lasted well.

I called the local distributor for Rust Bullet and it isn't cheap. Going to cost $1,300 for my 9m X 7m shed. The thing I do like about it is the prep work compared to high solids epoxy. I epoxied my last shed and it looked great, but the prep work took a significant amount of time. Also Rust Bullet is UV tolerant so I can coat the slab sticking out from the roller doors.

You should need 6 gallons. You will also want 6oz of their solvent per gallon. Mix it in. That should give you two coats. It would certainly be a lot cheaper here but the import costs are a killer I would imagine.

Thanks 69, I'll do a bit of reading up on that one. Never heard of it until today.

That works out to more than double of other 2 pack products I've seen here in Australia. Which product are you looking at bigjon?
