Hi my name is Jacob.

I recently bought me a small piece of land out in Raleigh NC with a small trailer to live in. Out in the back yard was a small shed but no garage :(. it is 12x8 shed

After lurking on this site for the last few months i finally broke down and started to clean up my shed and make space for me to work in. Plans for later are to build a small car port about 10x20 to keep my project/race car that i been working on for the last 3 years. The shed will be my tiny tiny work shop

on to the pics of my progress so far, please not that i have been putting this together with little money available since i been remodeling the inside of my house.

the shed:

now after some motivation to start working on my motor i decided i need to make space and get organized. but the problem is i don't have much funds at the moment so i got lucky thanks to my father and scored a few free items. Most items came from a store that was closed down and i was able to take what i could. That also included a bunch of 2x4's that used to be a wall but got torn down

scored a free counter top, few sheets of peg board, and 2 metal shelf/cabinets
truck loaded on the way home

counter top about 1inch 1/2 thick and very heavy

metal cabinets with plexi glass top and sliding window/doors...

few sheets and pieces of peg board

After getting some free supplies i managed to score a brand new Omega 12 ton press for $100 which normally goes for about $400.

fast forward a week later, while in Home depot buying a new sink and faucet for my bathroom i happen to walk down the tool box isle. And what do i find ....... A damaged 40 inch 10 drawer Husky tool box. After inspecting it i called over and employee and asked to see what was the new price since it was damaged. The box started its like at $398 on sale for $298 then reduced to $249. I decided to wait after the employee told me to come back on Saturday when they had more leeway to give a better deal.

Come Saturday i return to haggle on the price some more. At first the manager lowered the price to $223 then i counter offered $200 and he took it now on the way to work with my new box.

top box and its damage

bottom half still in the box

While at work since i didn't have time to take it home. I decided to remove the mangled top by drilling out the rivets.

top and hing now off

now if any one has any ideas what i can do with the shocks let me know they are new and unbent.

First i hung the 2 metal cabinets and brand new shop light i had that i didn't use in my last garage.

Then after looking at the nasty carper i decided to remove it and it looks better with out it.

after part of the carpet was removed i started to make my bench. sorry no pics of me making it

a bit more work and got some peg board hung up

still tryign to figure out where to put the top half of the box but for now it sits on top the bench

Great beginning! And you're getting work done in there already. Have you tried beating out that Husky cab top? Might be do-able.

"cause now I dont know where to put the box"

Could you get some thin sheet and fab out a new top?
Or you could get some butcher block and make a top for it out of wood and mount it on a stand as another work surface? Possibly under-mount it to another bench or in a larger cabinet?
You definitely seem pretty resourceful, something will come to you!

I love it. I started out with an 8'x8' shed which grew into two 8'x8' sheds, the second for storage. For 15 years that's what I had. You can do a ton in a tight space, if you're creative.

Good job, quite an improvement!
My very first shop was a RENTED chicken coop, dirt floor, one extension cord and no heat.
Oh, and I had to walk 6 miles, uphill through the snow, in bare feet, just to get there!

Nice application of resources there cowboy.congratulations harder to work a small spot than bigger, makes you think harder,Ouch, that hurts, best to you:evil:good buy on the box, make a mini work bench out of wood with a flip up like the lid,or ?

Thanks. yes its been hard to figure out how to make use out of the small space but slowly but surely i been getting it to work.

i have a few pieces of wood i am looking to make a top out of. then try to make a car out of it so it is movable but for now it is staying on top of the bench

Where did you get your new shelf unit? Looks like you're doing great on the cheap tool acquisition front. Best wishes on the carport expansion.

i got it at Walmart for around $52 i think and HD sell them for like $60+
its a great sturdy shelf holds alot of weight

yea a few cheap tools but if they last they last once they break i will upgrade them to something better

thanks hope to start working on the car port in the next few weeks once it warms up

Ok I have to ask about the car, to me the real reason for sheds/carports/garages is to hold the objects of desire, whether that be car, truck, or whatever. I am more into cars than the rest so I want to hear more about the car. Nice job on the tools and use of space by the way.

well i am glad some finally asked :bounce:

I want a carport for not to store one of my cars, but i also need some were to work on all my cars:
-2002 Subaru WRX wagon daily driven by my wife- has a few mods along with full air ride suspension
-1999 Honda CR-V daily driven by me- i have lots of plans for this
-1992 Honda Civic race car- more info below :wtf::3gears:
-2004 Subaru Forester XT waiting for anew motor :(
well the main main reason to make the carport area is to store my 92 Honda Civic (yes i know most will laugh) It is my dream car per-say. It is also my race car.

Since i know you are gonna ask about the specs here is a small and quick run down on the car:

Motor is a fully built D16z6 (1.6 sohc) sleeves, rods, pistons, cam, valves and valve springs.
Suspension as of now is Tein Flex with ASR subframe brace along with a Type-R rear sway bar.

There is alot alot more to it but i mike make a better post on it later, Here are some pics

Here is the old motor

The new motor waiting

The Wifes car

It is always nice to see a fresh engine in a bag just waiting to be put to good use. What sort of racing do you use the civic for? I won't give you much **** about the civic, I had an ****** zx2 s/r that was the car for me for 7 years before someone hit me and totaled it. If it hadn't gotten wrecked I'd probably still be driving it today. I really wanted to mod it past bolt ons, but always had to have it as my daily driver.

I ended up landing a great job after school and bought my dream, one of my many dream cars. A replica of a 66 cobra, just like the cartooned one in my avatar. I've got to get my storage/garage shed done so I can actually start working on it again. I don't get to drive it much because it got so buried in the garage after getting married and having two kids. Good luck with the build.

yes i love walking in the shop (shed) and opening the crate to just look at my motor. While it waits for one day to be finally assembled and put back in the car.
Its cool i am waiting for **** talking. I get it all the tiem but 90% of the people have walked away in shame :lol_hitti
I was just drag racing with the car with the last set up i had, but i would love to get into autocross.

Well that's good to hear that you were able to get a great job and buy your dream car. Hope you get a chance to get it back out, but i understand when it comes to getting married and having a family they are first the cars and projects are then sat on the back burner

Well I thought about trash talking the 4 cylinder, but decided to refrain for the time being. :) What sort of times were/are you running with it as it is? I'd like to do some auto crossing as well, but the closest ones to me are about 2 hours away and I don't have a way to take the family and car so that has been a no go thus far, maybe one day.

Ok so here goes... Let me get this right, your honda has 1.6 liters and my mountain dew has 2 liters? When your car grows up and gets its other 4 cylinders let me know. LOL, those are two of my favorite ones there that I used to hear all the time. Those are some pretty respectable times for a FWD car and lots of power out of that little engine. As sad as it is I bet it would be too close of a race between your car and mine, for now. Even though it is my dream car it is not my dream engine. It is a pretty stock 351w out of a truck with factory heads. I know it has an edlebrock intake and carb, a little better ignition, and of course the side pipes, and maybe a cam. Sadly I doubt I make much more than 225 hp, I'm sure the heads are killing me. But because it is a 2,400 lb car with 4.10 gears it feels fast and is fun. In time I'll have the engine up to snuff, but will just deal with it for now.

Isn't there a CSR (************ Rule) about putting Kobalt (Lowe's), Husky (Home Depot), Craftsman (Sears/Kmart) and Pittsburgh (Harbor Freight) tools in the same box?

Many years ago when I was living in Tampa I was acquainted with a young man who built some mighty fast Volkswagen (bug) motors in one of those metal garden sheds that come in a box. He told me that all it required was organization and the self discipline needed to keep it organized.

A super shop can wait. Right now you need to be collecting tools and developing skills. For most hobbiests Craftsman, Kobalt, Husky, and Pittsburgh wrenches are more than adequate. You can upgrade and expand as you grow older, wiser, and hopefully more prosperous. Good luck to you.
