Why not put vent on sidewall, underneath gable, or if it's a single pitch roof, then at high side of sidewall or front wall?

Works better if you can use two vents either both high up for cross ventilation or one down low to allow cool air to be pulled in when the heat escapes.

I have a ridge vent and soffit vents. I installed them when I built the shed. It's 12x16 with 8'4" walls and a 7:12 pitched roof. Kind of steep for a shed but it really gets the air flowing through. I have no ceiling and my door is 6' wide and 7' tall. Ridge vents are not hard to install and they don't leak when the wind blows rain sideways.

That also helps to remove humidity that may condense on the ceiling or underside of the roof.

When I rebuilt the roof of an old 10x16 shed here I put in a ridge vent and also soffit vents. This roof vents well. The original roof on the shed was a pitched roof but it was way to low pitched for the snow we get even in Southern Maine. I cut and installed rafters with a much better pitch more like a 5/12, along with plywood and asphalt shingles and that eliminated me climbing up on a somewhat unsound roof to shovel snow off. Believe it or not the old roof had fiberboard in 4x8 sheets perhaps "Homasote" for sheathing and rolled roofing :wtf: you could feel it flexing in later years. I occasionally roof rake it from the ground now if needed. A much better feeling at 66 years old

Really ? I got those on my house. Another great idea not quite working out. When my buddy climbed up on my roof to look at shingles he saw that and said .”oh you got those things, get rid of those when you do your roof. They ****”. His whole family was in roofing in Mass. I’d love to prove him wrong but those damp spots keep appearing on my ceiling when it howls and rains. I might use them on a shed but never again anyplace else.

Then they were crappy or not installed properly. Either that or my roof is an anomaly...no water regardless of the wind

Roll out ridge vents are a complete waste...Get 4 ft plastic ridge vents. How much time are you hangin in your shed...grab the mower, leave the door open

I agree. They're EVERYWHERE around here. It's code in some towns...

My shed was built with a 5' ridge vent. but no soffit vents. I was going to install them, but when I had the damage from the fallen tree repaired we installed a full ridge vent and two 12"x 16" gable vents. It stays right at ambient temperature now.

Im in the same boat as OP. I put 2 of those square roof vents on my 12 x 12 shed when i built it a few years ago. It gets really hot in there. Its not that i spend alot of time in there, but everything in there is baking. Including the gas can and other power equipment. Never considered a ridge vent, since i was building it from plans. I am considering a powered fan since i have power in there already. Im just not sure i trust the thermostatically controlled part. And i think its easier than redoing the roof.

The thermostats work fine. We put them in all the time. Simple install. Romex wire. W to W, B to B. 15" round hole for between rafters. Waaaay over kill for a shed but it will work to keep the shed cool in such a small area. If you do it staple some chicken wire over the hole from the inside so you dont scalp yourself from the metal fan blade and end up in the hospital or dead.

That is exactly what is on my 10x16 shed that was built by the Amish guys I had make it for me.

Two 8 inch by 8 inch gable vents were standard along with the full ridge vent, but I asked for the larger gable vents as an option.

The only time the temperature in the shed gets hotter than ambient is when the sun is on it and the doors are closed. But even then it is not that bad.

My ridge vent is formed aluminum. The rain water would have to hit the roof, make a U-turn up to get through the vent and make another u-turn down to get inside the roof. It also has fine metal screen to keep out insects. I bought them at Lowe's pretty cheap. I think I gave $40 for two and they are 10 feet long each. I bought the sealed connector, end caps for them, and matching screws as well. They do not require sealant.

This is very similar to my ridge vent. Lowe's no longer has my ridge vent on their website.

I'm in the process of finishing the roof on my 10x15 shed. I am going to install Cora-vent Revolution ridge vent. I hate those big aluminum box vents on roofs, they look like ****.
