This is a public service announcement. It's ok to spell it as "gage" instead of "gauge" if you want to.

When I think of "gauge" I think of this:

Gauge is gauge over here. The other is used on your side of the border.

Guess it depends upon where you live.

Sorry, they are most definitely two different things.
Gage is a standard.
Gauge is an indication or measurement.

This is off a quick google search..

A gauge is both a measurement and a measurement tool. Gauge and measure both have the letter “U” in them. If you can pair these two words by the common letter “u,” you will be all set.

Additionally, there is very little chance that gage will ever make its way into your writing, as evidenced by the fact that dictionaries now mark it as obsolete (or at least on its way to obsolescence).

Summary

Is it gauge or gage? If you were to choose based purely on probability, gauge would win every time.

Gage is the spelling of an obsolescent word meaning a pledge, a challenge, etc.

Gauge is the spelling to use when you measure measurement, estimate, or standard.

Gauge and gage are two different things in my book and you have identified both of them correctly.

^^^^THIS^^^^

In the machinist world, most of the time it is spelled "gage". In the automotive world, it seems like most measuring equipment is spelled "gauge". Exception being "feeler gage" or "feeler gauge".

But truth be known.....it's probably acceptable either way of spelling today.
