Hi all...
So im looking for some ideas. A buddy is looking at putting some internal boilers/furnaces outside. The manufacturer is happy to keep the warranty if they are enclosed and protected from the elements to some extent.
However the manufacturer will not support a typical corrugated sheet metal look... so im thinking of ideas...
One that is currently in the lead is cnc punching on flat sheet metal (powder coated).
Im looking for some ideas on the shape of the punch... i like the old school hood louvre, think jaguar, but is there any other looks people have used that they have a pic of??

I would suggest you get the manufacturer to come up with a list of specifications that have to be met in order to retain the warranty and have it signed by both parties. Then build to those specs. If you build something with no specs, they can probably find a way to deny the warranty.

Im a little confused by your post? The manufacture cant be concerned with aesthetics right? Like jim said I think you need to post more about specific requirements.

Are you trying to vent it? Lots of commercially available sheet metal siding, roofing, soffit, and equipment screen panels that could be configured for proper ventilation and waterproofing.

When I think of cnc work as you speak I think of the De young museum by Herzog & de Meuron. They used a cnc punching / dimpling to articulate a pattern and control transparency. They had a much bigger budget than most of us though.

Asthetics are the main and really only concern. The commercial sheet metal is considered too "cheap looking" for this manufacturer and they will not go for it. Only if we can come up with a smart looking enclosure will they allow the external mounting...
The installer can cope with the specs with regards to venting and penetrations as they are the specialist with this kind of installation.
So at this early stage im looking for ideas on punch designs like below, however the design below isnt ideal..

I would simply build a shed that matched the rest of the buildings onsite. That does 2 things. First is the deal with weathertightness and second, it would blend in.

Ahhh but this is not a one installation deal.. its going to be what they use whenever they are installing these boilers externally..

I have to wonder why they are so concerned about the aesthetics, or what the enclosure looks like as long as it meets specifications:headscrat

Sounds like you need to go to Pinterest and look for unique archetectual examples. There are loads of cool commercial buildings that are covered in sheet metal.

Seems like this should be decided by the folks who own said building.

Until they make the decision all you are doing is wasting your time by throwing ideas at them and hoping they like one.

I think the op is designing and building the enclosure for the manufacturer and not the property owner. Sounds like they want a unit that they will provide when they sell a unit for exterior installation?

So the european manufacturer of boilers only have internal warranted units. However the installer, if he comes up with a nice aesthetic design can use it and they will honour external installations (obviously we will ensure sealing etc is appropriate).. however manufacturer will not honor any warranty if they get put in a typically corrugated shed built material.

That makes it even greyer. What if you use some type of material that they turn their nose to? Good way for them to get around warrantee-ing their product if it fails.
