Sheet Metal Shear

I have searched everywhere trying to find this but with no luck. Has anyone ever made their own sheet metal shear. The kind where you put the sheet in and either step on the lever or hydraulic kind.

Look for a used machinery dealer one that handles tools for making duct work for the heating and air conditioning industry, a three foot wide, foot shear should cost $400 to $600 dollars.

Most HVAC shops like to own four foot wide shears it wastes less material so the under four foot ones are a lot less money

Thanks for the suggestions, I will check these places out. They had one were I worked and it was so nice to use. I would like to add one to my own collection of metalworking tools.

If you do a search, the ones that you step on are commonly called "stomp shears"

I would think that you could buy one a lot cheaper than building one. The mechanism is fairly simple, but with the tolerances that you would need to shear would be fairly tight. What size of shear were you thinking about building? If you are just looking for a way to shear metal, you could adapt or use some of the cheaper smaller powered shears.

good machinery is always available cheap because America is losing so many mfg jobs

I worked in a sheetmetal shop a couple of years back, wow did they have a nice shear

They're not THAT cheap. But if you look around, you can find a good deal. I just missed out on the perfect stomp shear a few months back. Looked in real good shape and the guy wanted $350 for it, which was a real good price. But by the time I saw it, someone else had found it and ended up buying it.
