Where do you get your sheet metal for projects? I'm not a metal fabrication wizard or anything. Just need a few small pieces for mounting/reinforcing stuff, etc. Looked at McMaster Carr, but hate to pay shipping on something like that. Do welding supply stores like AirGas sell sheet stock or tubing? I'm a real FNG when it comes to this stuff. Just looking to get started.

Thanks.

Look up steel suppliers in your phonebook. If you only need smaller pieces tell them you want to look through their drops. Bring a tape measure and pick out what you want. Some scrapyards will set aside good pieces and sell by the pound as well, usually bigger stuff not little bits of sheet.

There is also my favorite method of cruising the back road dump sites and looking in dumpsters.

Picshooter,

How do they treat cash/walk in customers?

Most industrial places roll their eyes and try to scare you off with a three figure minimum to create a P.O.

We have an ALRO here but I've never been just because of how the other places treated me.

BTW, if anyone ever starts a welding supply/gas distributor that has even 3 hours on Saturday morning or stays open till 6:00, I promise to never buy anything from anyone else ever. As it is now, to buy gas, I'm burning vacation time. Even banks have weekend hours now.

I just picked up 40' of 1-1/4" x 3/16" new box tubing with a little surface rust for 32.00 at a gaby iron in illinois... They buy scrap too. They were more than happy to help me out and let me look around in the yard.. New price on this tubing is normally $.33 per inch.. Yeah I got a good deal. So my answer is check the scrap yards that sell new and used steel...

I am always a walk in. Never a problem and they cut and sheared at no charge. No minimum. Great place!

Keep your eyes open, there is free stuff all over the place. Bed rails and frames, washers and dryer cabinets (18 Ga. Steel), street hockey nets (1 1/2" tubing), chromed table legs (1" round tubing), misc tables and plant stands that yield more tubing and rods. all from garbage day, 3 1/2 X 1/2" X 4 Ft bar and 5 Ft lengths of 1/2" dia SS rod that came out of a neighbour's old fence. Found some free 4" X 3/8" X 5 Ft. bar that was dumped by a go cart track locally. Watch for those stand up office dividers being tossed out, they are usually full of 1" sq. tubing, and chrome plated yet.I picked up some smaller sheets of 18 ga. steel, 3/8 X 1 in bar, 15 X 24 in 14 ga. tread plate at a scrap yard very cheap a number of years back and am still working on it.

My latest project is a trailer for my bicycle, so I can bring in more, and of course get groceries and beer. See my small stash here:

Check your local fabricators too. I have one that makes filing cabinets and has a box of 14 to 18 Ga pieces that he lets me go through........I keep his wooden crate pile cleaned up. Not just junk spruce skids, these are heavy duty crates made from 2 X 4 and 4 X 4 hard maple. My firewood for the winter, in addition to trees that are cut down (and also free)

What are you building a welding table??

well sorta, i've got a tiny garage, and need more work space. since i do a mix of everything it makes more sense to me to make one work bench for both metal work and non metal working. and since i have a good amount of 2x2x.25 wall tubing i figure i'll make one big welding surface and cover it when not inuse with some masonite.

o and i tend to beat on stuff so making the table solid and heavy will keep it in place

Not to step on lilredex but I would stay away from the bed frame stuff... Angle iron is about the cheapest you can buy... Check craigslist under materials and punch in steel... Usually something pops up... 1-1/2" x 1-1/2 " x 1/4" is $.20 an inch.. the same in 1/8" thick is only $.10 an inch.. Pretty cheap IMO for new stuff.

Local Alro has a will call desk. They seem to have no issue with small orders even when paying with credit card. They have even offered cheaper solutions the few times I’ve had sticker shock. We also have a recycling center that sells drops and new steel.
