You're going to find varying opinions on this and to each his own.

Personally I'm not a fan of drywall in the garage. I hate to finish it, wouldn't care for the dings or holes that I'm sure I'd knock into it. I'd rather have something that I can hang stuff almost anywhere or be rugged.

One thing you need to realize with the drywall is your location, humidity and changes in temperature may lead to cracks in your finished drywall.

Also consider beaded plywood. I used plytanium from Georgia Pacific. It is shiplaped to hide the seams. I nailed it with an air brad nailer and finished with two coats of clear laquer. Trim is southern yellow pine, also finished natural.

I used the white coated Masonite. It's very bright and I didn't have to paint or stain anything, screw it up and I'm done.

I vote Pine. (obviously) Sheetrock just wouldn't look right with post & beam construction. I wash vehicles in the left bay and splash hasn't hurt it so far even though it is bare wood. Have to be a little more careful when cutting or grinding though.

Better check your local code, First! Really be a ***** to put something up to later get to take it down, because of a code violation!

X2. I would use 5/8 type X sheetrock (firecode). Why put wood up on the walls in a garage ? You could install aluminum diamond plate (over sheetrock) 3' up from the floor. Looks great too.

We used salvaged cedar fence boards on the walls and rafters(free). The siding
is re-claimed cypress board& batt.If I hadn't had the fence boards I would
use osb or 1/2"plywood,takes abuse.
