I dunno if you can't open a cabinet because of stuff in front of it, you have other problems.

The four cabinets behind my lathes are about 18" from the big lathe at the closest. I can open any drawer and get to everything in seconds.

Steve - tell us about your crane. I have been thinking about planning for one in my future build.

I am all about foot deep cabinets over my head. I try not to start anything else til I am done working on what is in front of me.......not easy with short attention span!

Oh man, you hit the nail on the head lol. I have to keep telling myself...... stop !!! Finish one project before starting another !!

The jib crane in the picture is 1000Lb capacity about 20' on the boom. I have three of these jibs in the shop along with a bridge crane. The jibs have 1/2 ton electric chain hoists and, the bridge has two 2 ton hoists with wireless controls. The jibs are mounted on I-beam columns, the columns support the roof as well. The jibs are arraigned so a load can be transferred between them and, from the bridge to most machines in the shop.

I have shelves and cabinets. I'm like many others - I like to use both. My tools and such are in cabinets, my supplies and chemicals are in storage closets and my models and collectibles are in a mix of shelves and old china cabinets.

I have a mix of pegboard and french cleats - with plans to french cleat the new shop and make small project/task boards out of pegboard to move as I need. Shelves are great for bulky stuff, but cupboards give a better degree of protection from dust, grinding/welding, wood chips and such - plus they will look cleaner, more organized and higher end.

I had like 15 rubbermade totes on pallet racking shelves in my last shop. Worked well for heavier stuff, but as the totes got full of parts they would be a bear to get on and off the shelves and tended to crack. And then cabinets for tools and spray paint cans etc.

I prefer both, I like cabinets to keep things clean and that I use more often.
I also like some shelves designed for holding plastic totes for things I don't use everyday like plumbing stuff, one for electrical etc.

Oldbear, Love your display shelves kind of what I have in mind for a winter project.

I have a lot of nice old toy tractors and cars from growing up in 60's and 70's. I was a oops kid so all my toys are pristine in boxes but I have had them packed away all these years. Finally decided I want to put them out to enjoy I don't care if value goes down I'm not planning on selling them anyways.

I like your set up. You have such cool looking memorabilia.
