I need to make some custom shelving for my van, and plan on using aluminum for weight savings compared to steel.

The aluminum I have is .063.

I wanted to buy a welder, but money is a little tight for a while.

I have used lots of pop rivets, but on thinner steel sheet, and not on the same scale as van shelving.

Will it work, or will the rivets loosen up? Maybe a different type of rivet?

Tightening 100's of nuts and bolts doesn't appeal to me.

it will work
when using it on thinner sheets you will get the best results to install a washer on the backside before squeeseing the rivit.
this will also help with the vibration issue

For what it's worth a made a tray for a 50 cal ammo can I had filled with tools and bolted into place under the hood of my truck. The rivets were fine after 4+ years of holding that ammo can in place. I also took my truck off road pretty often so they really got bounced around.

The tray was aluminum angle and riveted at the joints. The only reason I removed it was because I bought a welder and made another out of steel while practicing.
