Yeah, I know, there are plenty of threads about garage shelving. Also, be forewarned, I'm wordy.
However, I do shotshell reloading, and currently have 150 lb of lead shot (25 lb bags), and when I get started again (recently moved, haven't gotten into the swing of things yet), will likely look for bargains and load up even more.
I have very little experiance building anything (self-taught on cars and bikes, heck I'm borrowing a truck from a guy I know, and a circular saw from his son!), and want to say that I should stick with 2X4 for my supports, though if I went with 2X2 as I've sometimes seen, I'd gain a heck of a lot of room. But in dealing with bags of shot, am I dealing with a lot more weight than most people? Much of my ammo will likely end up on the shelves as well. Though if I put much there, I'll build some sort of doors, sliding or swinging, so everyone in the world doesn't see things. (Most of my ammo is in my second bedroom)
My other question is thickness of plywood. if I do each shelf like a wall, and put cross-support every 16 in or 2 ft, I wouldn't need to go overboard with the plywood, would I? Merely something along the line of 1/2 in? Maybe I just overbuild one section?
As far as joining goes, I like the idea of the Strong Tie brackets, but I don't see a local source (supposedly Lowes carries them, haven't seen them)
All of this is in a rental, so I'll be leaving it behind, or at least tearing it out, and covering up the holes I make for steadying the whole contraption when I leave, most likely 3 years out.
I'm getting up early tomorrow to move things around, put the car in (for once) and take measurements. I want to build a rack for the tires (up close to the open door on the left, looking in), definately 2X4 all the way. I may be able to pivot the trailer to be on the left as well, giving much more space on the back wall. The tool box will be going where the wooden table (temporary) is. The store-bought rack is staying where it is, fits like a glove.
I also am not sure what depth I'm going to go with, but I suspect ~3 ft, seems like it would fit those rubbermaid containers pretty well. That leaves me with a lot of extra 1 ft sections, but 4 ft seems to deep, and 2 ft not nearly deep enough. Ideally I'll see how much room I need with the car, but don't think that will be a problem, it's a pretty small wagon.
And that bench may not be sticking around, I may build something with shelves underneath... just depends. For now I may just build up to the edge of the bench, then remove the bench, and rework it so that I have an open section of shelving that I can put the boards back down in for a bench. The spray cans for now will be going on shelves made out of the neighbor's old fence planks, just about exactly the right width for cans.
