Shelving ideas...from the ceiling down

I am in the process of building a new 34' x 26' detached garage for the Mustangs. I have the shell up, and through this winter (and it's long here in MN!) I'll be finishing the inside. I have a few questions that I'd appreciate any feedback on.

One of them is around shelving for the interior. I have 13' ceilings, and one wall is going to have shelving for those things that...
1) I don't need too often
2) Don't fit in the attached garage or the basement
3) That my wife is about to throw out if I don't get them out of the house
and / or
4) For some reason I just can't bring myself to part with (like some of my old
toys from growing up...as I wait for grandkids!).

I'd like to keep the floor space open so don't really want the standard shelving units that you see so often. I am really thinking more about something that hangs from the ceiling or that's bolted to the wall. I'm pretty sure that I'm going to run them the full 34' deep and have 3-4 of them coming down from the ceiling...so at say 2' or so between shelves they would end up coming down to 5-7' off the ground...plenty of room to maneuver something under them. I'm thinking of using those tubs you get at Home Depot / Lowes, which when you add up a bunch will have the opportunity to get pretty heavy so that's of concern.

Any thoughts on pre-made / purchased or do-it-yourself? Any concepts that you could point me to? Pics? Links?

Thanks much! Dan...

No reason not to go floor to ceiling wherever you've got the room for it. 'Soffit style' cabinets attach to both the floor and the wall. I made my own, out of cheap wood. I use them for longer-term storage. Below that, I've got more durable cabinets that hold stuff I use more often. It works well for a small garage like mine. I don't need to get up on a stool very often. And I'm not tripping over all that stuff that I only need once in a while.

You can also have the high cabinets come out further from the wall. Just make them taller than you are.

34x26 is a nice size. You're lucky. Mine is only 20x22 -- which means only one car fits in it.

i used ELFA shelving from the Container Store. Works well. Shelves up to 24" deep will hold most tubs. They are adjustable and configurable.

Careful not to overload the trusses if attaching to the bottom chord of the trusses.
Just the weight of 3 or 4 shelves 2-3 feet deep could put a tremendous load on the
trusses. A floor to ceiling support every 6-8 feet could still allow storage under the
lowest shelf.

Do you take the Mustang to Road America?

Wow! This is a GREAT place for information! Thanks so much for the ideas and the welcome. I just stumbled upon this site yesterday and I've already learned a lot.

Hit-By-Thunder...great theme if I do say so myself! I have 2 blue Shelby stripes in my attached garage (33x36). When we moved here 2 years ago I thought that would be all that I needed...but then we picked up a boat, wanted it all inside in the winter, etc and we kicked off this project since we had the land. My stripes went across the top part of the wall. The paint lady thought I was nuts bringing in a piece for her to match Guardsman Blue!

Drsifu...those elfa shelves are very similar to a couple of styles I found at Home Depot today. This seems like the easiest way to go, but its all exposed. This was my original thought, but now looking through all the pics I don't know any more. Will have to noodle on this a bit.

Scbird94...I have a 65 Fastback which was in GT350 trim when we bought it in CA (drove it back from there with my 16 year old daughter...what a hoot...could have tossed the car away at that point as the price was worth those 4 days with her!). 80K miles, and as far as we could tell the engine and ****** had never been touched. We balanced and blueprinted, bored and stroked it, and ended up with just shy of 400HP and about 350 in torque. Also put a 5 speed in it from a 93 Cobra R. We finished the engine bay and the interior over the last year or so. Next up is a paint job in a couple of years. We also have a triple black 94 GT Convert that we've done a lot of work on, and have raced it in the past (the last was at Nashville Motor Speedway). Soooo different from driving the 65. We recently sold our 67 Convert and are on the lookout for the next project...but the garage comes first. We are in the SW part of the Twin Cities. What do you have?

Red05gt...we don't do RA but we have done the Hot Rod Power Tour twice. We got the 65 published in the Sep edition of Muscle Car Review from the first time we went on it. Really fun.

We got a deal on some pallet racks from a business that was moving out of state. Ours are 36" deep by 13' high. The shelf cross bars are 7' wide and can hold about 4500lbs. on each shelf. We got 80 running feet for $450 total and that includes the heavy screen shelves with it. We just cut the tops to the proper height for our garage. We are going across the full length of the back wall. Going to have a set of uprights at each end and one in the middle. The shelves don't need to start at bottom so we are going to start at about 6' high so we can have toolboxes and work benches.

darkk, that's a great deal on the pallet racks compared to what it would cost in
lumber to build that much shelving.

When I get my shop built I intend to get used shelving like they use in super markets, with 24" depth shelves, using just the posts over 84" of the lower gondola for added shelves to 12 feet..the obvious, you need a strong wall to anchor to or you need to incorporate a homemade support bracket toward the front of the shelves. Part I like, if you have a strong wall, there is no wasted space due to front support brackets.

There was a thread on this a while back. Maybe in fabrication sub-forum. I did something with 2 x 4 and 2 x 6 that you can hold a v-8 with no prob. From the rafters. Let me see if I can find a pick.
