What have you guys done for shelving. We need some basic shelves for our basement for storing rubbermaid totes mostly. 9' ceilings. Cost is a factor. Want them sturdy though.

If you are a member of Sams Club or Costco take a look at their Gorilla Rack shelving. They are pretty decent shelves for the money. They are easily adjustable and hold a good bit of weight.

If you want them strong, and want to make them out of wood, check out my "Jackass" shelving in the fabrication thread. I used 2 x 6 and 2 x 4.

I used 4x8 sheets of plywood or MDF and cut them lengthwise(2- 2'x8' shts) for shelving and 2x4's for the frames in my last house's basement. The 2' depth was perfect for the plastic bins. The first shelf I set off the floor by a couple inches in case I ever got water in the basement. And if you're really worried about water you can coat the bottom of the wood frame.

I usually build.

2x4 for frame, Dado in the legs for strength. 1/2" ply or 1"x4 varanda flooring for the shelves.
