i'm looking for something a bit less expensive than i've found at lowes to use as shelving rubber in the garage cabinets.

anyone have thought?

the roll i purchased at lowes was medium gray in color, 1/8" thick and oil proof... BUT was expensive. wife bought it for me, but didnt cover much.

another person suggested using truck bed lining as it would be less expensive than the roll rubber from lowes

I was walking through Sears one day and happened across a sale rack that had "Yoga mats" in it for about $5. It was basically just thick shelf liner in a roll that was 3' wide and 8' long. Maybe 1/8" thick. I bought 4 of them and cut them up for shelf liner. Worked great.

Sooo...Walk outside of the tool section and poke around other areas :D

Pure gum rubber? If you're in the midwest, there is probably an IBT store you can get ahold of. If not, check the Grainger or mcMaster carr cattledog.

not sure if it was pure gum rubber, but came in a roll around 8' long and 2' wide

russellville eh?

i grew up down the road in california.

I just bought a new tool cabinet and started to buy the rubber mats at the tool department at Lowe's, and then thought about it a second or two. I went over to the "closet" department (can't remember what department it was, but it was in the same "organizational" and "shelving" area). There was the same, exact rubber for shelving, in black, just packaged differently, for less than half the cost.

Honest to God, no difference whatsoever. It will be in the same area for shelving liners on rolls.

I ran out, tried Wal-Mart, and right there in the kitchen department, along with the shelving liner, was the same rubber lining. There were two types, solid rubber and the other that looks like this:

It was so cheap I tacked a big section of it on my bench.

I don't know about using it as shelving rubber, but I line my tool box drawers with the anti-skid stuff you put under area rugs. It's way cheaper than the Sears or Lowes tool box liners and looks the same to me, other than the colour is brown. We got it 9x12 foot sections for a couple of rugs. Hit up your local flooring store for some.

I have been looking at getting some closed-cell foam or neoprene rubber to line my shelves and tool box. Here is a good source for neoprene and Volara foam sheets at reasonable prices

http://closedcellfoams.com/

Also the Polyethelyne foam is good for tool cut-outs in drawers

i want to be able to drag a can of paint across the liner without the liner tearing or rolling up.

i'll snap a few photos of what my wife bought me and see if you have more suggestions.

This may sound crazy (hence my login name :willy_nil), but I bought magnetic sheet to line my metal-shelved cabinets. If bought in bulk roll form, it is not cost prohibitive (I paid $1/linear foot for 24" wide material when I bought a 60ft roll a couple of years ago). It absolutely does not shift around once stuck down. Heavy things slide nicely on it and it doesn't bunch up. Unlike most of the cheap rubber shelf liners, I doubt this stuff will ever degrade. And most of all, there is no chance that the paint on the original shelf will get scuffed/scratched up.

I wouldn't recommend it for roller boxes as the tools inside will slide around, but for stationary cabinets, it is perfect, IMHO.

Take a look at the flooring runner available at HD / Lowe's etc. In the flooring section on a big roll-cut to the length(s) you need. It's thick rubber (made to walk on) and ribbed so things won't roll off. And it's cheap - I think it's like $2/ ft. for 36" wide.

I use it as drawer liner as well.

Walking through the outdoor landscaping section at Lowes or HD a few weeks ago I saw some rubber mat stuff that looked like it was in 8' wide or so rolls, and was sold by the linear foot I think. I was just passing by, but at the time the thought crossed my mind that it would be good and inexpensive for toolbox drawer liners and that I needed to return and check it out when I had time, but I kind of forgot about it until now. Maybe an 1/8th inch thick, seemed pretty tough. If I get a chance to go back this week I'll check it more closely.

i got my black rolls at Home Depot. They are in the section next to the paint and window treatments, which is also generally by the flooring.
It comes in all types of colors. They sell the exact same stuff at Wal-Mart in the kitchen section (as mentioned) and I believe it runs the same price for the same size roll. I could never find enough black rolls at Wal-Mart though.

Buddy up with your local sprint car racer. Used RR's are around 105" around and 18" wide, and most guys will give the old ones away. If you were in KS, I'd give you a pile of them.
