How do I determine weight limit of a shelf? Besides loading it until something breaks...

Looks like I can get these cabinets when we replace them at work.

Website I found said something like 20# per peg.
These say 35# per peg. So with 4 pegs, 140#?

Is the peg the weak link or is the wood a concern?

I don't want to hassle with moving them and installing them at house if they won't hold up. I do not have anything specific that is heavy at the moment that I want to put on them, but car and motorcycle parts are definitely on the short list..

Thanks
Matt

Solid wood shelves or MDF? If solid and you load a shelf with books - what would you estimate that weight at? If they are solid shelves, they will bow long before breaking. If they are solid wood - they should hold up just fine.

That being said - even if they are a decent MDF I'd still grab them, unless you are only storing steel jigs and fixturing. Most normal things on normally spaced shelves will be fine.

Those are nice if you have the room for them. I had something similar and for extra piece of mind I drilled through the holes and braced under a few shelves with threaded rod and a few nuts on each end to hold them in place. All the holes line up so just count an drill. easily removed and the little shelf brackets can go back in place.

If you find they bow and they dont have a shelf pin for the back of the shelf add one it does wonders

No doubt...stop with the questions and start loading them up! Those will hold anything you need in a garage. They're ideal.

Haha thanks guys! Once the new shelves are in I will take them home
They are ~30"x30" and about 8' tall, so will be tons of storage. Just not sure what wall they will end up on...

Insurance guy came thru at work and decided that wood shelves in that room (IT network area) was a fire hazard, so metal shelving is coming in to replace it.
Sometimes it pays to do remodels at work, have gotten a few other goodies (SS table, lighting) that were otherwise going in the trash.

Thanks for the words of encouragement. Its almost time to start my own garage thread...

Great cabinets and lots of storage, Don't be too worried about the shelves, They will hold any thing you want to put on them, I would change over to the straight pins instead of the L pins...My 2 cents worth....Oh yea you will **** if you get them...
