I have seen it done.
No personal experience.
If I was to do it I think I would nest a 2x4 in the legs and cross piece, just for peace of mind.

I had those for a few years, hated them. Everything is there for the world to see and get's coated in dust when you blow out your garage or even just broom it out after a project. I'd suggest you find something with doors, you'll be happier. In my basement storage room, these are fine.

I work on large, heavy chunks of iron, so no way, shape, form or fashion are they heavy enough construction to be a workbench in my garage. Your results may vary, if it is mostly light-duty homeowner type projects.

I did it with shelving & love it (part bar / part work bench). Mine are gorilla racks, so they're 4' & 3' tall sections.

Like has been said, I wouldn't want to do wood working around them, but in my kart shop, there's no wood allowed anyway. Wood + engines don't mix.

I topped mine with pre-made kitchen countertop laminate for the workbench, and tiled the bar. It's tons of storage-as long as you're ok with it being open.

*I've seen the same concept at Menards - but with door kits available. Not how sure the cost would compare with actual cabinets, but they'd be sturdy as hell.

I have 3 sets of those. I put two in my shed and gave the other away. They are spider magnets....unless you keep it as clean as kartracer's above. I had one setup as a workbench and they are not very sturdy and the transition between the two was not flush.

I just bought two of the smaller version last weekend. You will definitely need a sturdier work surface on top, the partical board will not hold up. Also, these are fine for light duty work, but you could never stand on the workbench to get something off a shelf, the supports would warp. But if you just need something to support a work top, these will get the job done.

how did you mount the counter top to the racks and is it then mounted to the wall?

I've been using those as workbenches for the last couple of years. They aren't super sturdy. My main complaint is they don't stay in place that well if I'm wrenching on something in the vice I have mounted on one end. I ripped some 3/4" plywood to size and screwed it to the underside of the workbench tops, so that they sit flush with the legs. I got them knowing they work fine as a workbench until I build or buy something sturdier, and then I'll use them as shelves.
