Good "cheap" 2x4s make very nice shelving unless you can find good used metal shelving. Nice thing about the 2x4s is you can make whatever dimension you want. Every now and then I snag up all the 2x4s from shipping crates at work...then all you need is screws! Maybe check some local stores for pallets and crates you can salvage free usable wood! Just thinking out loud...lumber is expensive!

For garden items I think these work pretty well, you can haul them outside and hose them off if you need to. I use a little silicone caulk to keep them together when you move them. With the price of lumber you can't build anything for less, they also have metal shelving if you prefer.

What can you get for Free? I have received a lot of nice things for "Please & Thank You".

Don't forget to write Thank You notes when appropriate.

For my storage garages I looked on craigslist and found a great price on nearly new industrial bolt-less shelving from a guy who was going out of business.

If you build it from wood, the money is gone. nd wood is expensive nowadays.

If you get a good deal on bolt-less shelving, you can relocate or get your money back.

Thank you all
for the great ideas I like the use of old pallets and the lats could be used as the top boards
i have been looking for second hand steel racking but there is nothing to hand at the moment on gumtree or eBay
but I will keep looking
thanks

I really like the Menards extreme garage metal shelving. I have a lot of it in my garages and it’s very configurable, but prices have really gone up.

One tip with these is that you might want to put some cross bracing in them as they have a tendency to slip apart and fall. I’m about to do this with the shelves I have like this by cutting a 2x4 or two for each row and screwing them in to the metal.

2x4's and plywood make for great shelves. That way you can make it to fit exactly what you need. I built shelves in my shed after measuring the items I needed to put on them and made it all the height I needed.
