Anyone have any extra insight to Sherwin Williams Macropoxy 646 and their recommended clear coat Rexthane compared to other options.

As far as the what its made of, the quality and value vs others?

I did my garage 4.5 years ago with Sherwin Williams 2 coats tan Macropoxy 646 with flakes with 2 clear coats of Rexthane. Very happy with the process and how its holding up. At the time it was a bit more expensive than epoxy-coat for the sq/ft I was doing but instead of ordering online I went with the local SW just for convenience.

Even though I'm happy with my 4.5 year old garage epoxy floor, I'm just looking at all options again as this new shop jobs is much larger job. I have a 1700 sq/ft shop to do and SW's prices seems to have gone up even more. $145 per 2 gallon kit (part a, part b). $100 a gallon for the urethane clear coat.

MACROPOXY 646-100 FAST CURE EPOXY is a high solids, less than 100 g/L VOC, high build, fast drying, polyamide epoxy

ARMORSEAL REXTHANE I FLOOR COATING is a high solids,
single component, aliphatic, moisture cure urethane, industrial floor
coating. This urethane coating cures to a high gloss and chemical
resistant fi lm equivalent to two-part urethane coatings.

16 year old floor on left (brand and installer unknown but looked DIY) vs new. the next year I went back and did the 3rd bay (left side) and SW tinted it with the same color in their computer and it matched perfect

I can not help you with a comparison, but I used SW Macropoxy as well, in my shop back in 2010..price was reasonable at the time, and, this is a working shop( welding, grinding, heavy car maintenance etc..I know I was going to beat it up...
My thought was , it is cheap enough, I can recoat every couple of years..
Floor has held up very well for 9 years, it is not perfect by any means but I have not recoated it yet, but it is getting close...
I typically power wash and power scrub the floor twice a year..paint getting a little thin in places, but not bad...
I most certainly would do it again...

Pvander did u also do the rexthane clear coat? How many coats ?

No I did not, just rolled on 2 coats of the MP646, and that was it.. only minor concern is that it gets a bit slippery when wet, never a problem for me but other people have had issues...maybe some SW sharkgrip? Would help with that..

I have shark grip in the top coat of the clear rexthane. still can get slippery if you run into the garage with rain or snow.

off in the corner I did a little comparison. left side of picture has the shark grip traction additive. right side does not. the shark grip dulls it down a bit and makes it slightly harder to mop (still easy). i think most people use it.

I have a small section with just epoxy and no urethane clear coat and I like the clear coat a lot better. protects it and a nice gloss look for years

I used Legacy Industrial HD kit and I have some issues with it and can't recommend it. It was very thin, especially for something advertised as nearly 100% solids. I think they have some quality control issues. I have issues with it changing color and a severe issue with the clear coat not adhering.

I like the Sherwin Williams macropoxy system way better. The application process is better; mixes better, dried more consistently, color was very consistent, thicker than the hd kit, more forgiving and predictable working and recoat times. Overall seemed to be a more professional industrial product and the documentation shows it meeting industrial standards and certifications where as I feel Legacy was more of a small business product that was re-labeled from another supplier.

I looked at this stuff on the SW website last night as I have an 800sq. ft. garage floor to do here in the next few months.

According to their coverage chart I would need ~5 gallons(I think it was 4.5 gallons) of the color(I calculated two 5 mil coats, so 10 mils all together), plus 5 gallons of the clear(I think the math was the same as the color coat for coverage), plus flakes. 5 gallons of either color or clear was damn near 1000 bucks EACH... plus flake which is not cheap...

Seems way pricey to me.

SW gives some pretty big discounts to the right people . Many businesses get like 20% off. Try to find a business friend or get them to negotiate directly with you.

For my 475 square feet 2 stall section its cost me
2 * $110 per color coat
2 * $105 per clear coat

Order Torginol brand flake online, that is a high end brand of epoxy flake that many companies use.

Another benefit with SW is that anything that isn't color tinted you can return if you over order. Clear epoxy or urethane clear coat can can be returned. You can order extra so you don't run out on the job and return unused.

Also SW has their color tint codes in their computer and years later you can reorder the same tint and from my experience it matches perfect.
