After some research and weighing the options of Plaster, Drywall or wood, I decided to finish the inside of my 24 x 26 detached garage with OSB. I grew up in the plaster and eventually drywall trade as my grandfather, father and uncle owned the business for over 60 yrs. The reason I chose OSB was due to heating and cooling issues and the effects on the seams, joints and corners. Unless the garage is "heated all the time" it would be constant maintenance due to the winter months (Michigan). Constant expansion and contraction occurs from heating and cooling.

Since I am a huge Detroit Tigers fan it is done in their team colors. I primed and painted the ceiling white and the walls a silver-gray with a blue and white stripe around the perimeter. The work bench has a orange pin stripe on the facing with a dark blue back-splash that is trimmed with white molding. I also purchased a couple Detroit Tiger fathead logos for the walls and Gladiator storage cabinets. I must say I was very skeptical at first, however it turned out GREAT! What a difference a good paint job makes.

My next project is to decide what to use on the floor? I have been looking at options for about 6 months. I am looking at a product from Sherwin Williams called Rex-thane (not sure if this is the correct spelling). A Sherwin Williams Representative informed me of it, however I can't find any info on it. I just want to use a product that is not too difficult to apply, protects the concrete from the winter salt and looks clean in the summer. I prefer it to be gray in color and reasonably priced. Has anyone heard of it? I am open to other suggestions as well. I will post pictures as soon as I get a chance.

If you're in Metro Detroit check out Metro Floor Coating Supply in Warren. I am leaning towards going with them. They will give you an hour "training session" and they are available for tech support via cell phone while you're applying. They have also done a lot of floors in the area, you could go check out their work. The guy even offered to let me watch them do a local floor so I could get kind of real life training. They will ship to you if not in the area as well. Call and have your questions ready - talk to Mark.

I bought the Fathead block M for my garage!

I've come across Rex-thane here in the forums, try searching for it. If memory serves, people were not recommending it as opposed to the ArmorSeal HC1000 epoxy. It's funny that I saw this thread, as I just applied the Sherwin Williams ArmorSeal and clear coated it with the ArmorSeal Urethane Polyester enamel (clear). I have an account there, so I was able to get the 4 gallons (2-A, 2-B) epoxy and the 3 gallons clear (2-A, 1-B) for about $80/gal. Coated a little over 700 ft2 I used the industrial color SW4030, which is caled "Nickel." Its alight silver color which i used in contrast to a much darker color for my cabinets (graphite) from the same color chart.

I'll post up my thread in a couple days once its all dried up so i can walk on it, but I can tell you...the stuff was easy to apply, looks really sharp, and has great protective properties. The real biatch with any good floor coating is the inane amount of prep that you must invest to ensure a quality finish/durable bond with the substrate.

Thanks for the advice guys. Hey iceman I'm only about an hour south of Warren so that opens up another option for me. I will also look more seriously at the Armorseal HC1000 epoxy. I have gotten a ton of ideas on this forum and enjoy reading about everyone's experiences with various products. I look forward to seeing a3tripod pics. Any other ideas or comments are appreciated. Oh yea I love Michigan football to.....GO BLUE!

I'll get some pictures up soon. Its been 24 hours, so I should be able to walk on it now...I'm going to wait until tomorrow though, to be safe. Good luck with your choice.

PS. the Urethane coating is supposedly low VOC, but I gotta tell you...the whole house smelled of noxious fume. I had both garage doors open and it was certainly potent while wet. I can't compare it to other urethane, (this was my first), but i'd hate to see what a non-LOW VOC product smelled like.

Dom, if I get mine completed before you do yours you're welcome to stop by to check it out. I am in Southgate, guessing not too far from you. Either way I will post before, during, and after photos.
