Shielding gas bottle question

Just wondering if anyone familiar with gas cylinders can tell me what this means? It's stamped into a 300cf bottle I recently acquired. Hopefully I attached a picture.

It was hydrotested in November of 2014.
Hydrotest before that was sometime in 2004.

The star means something but I forget.

The plus sign means that it can be filled 10% above the rating.
The star means that the next recertification is due in 10 years, rather than the normal 6.

I was just giving this bottle. I don't have "paperwork". I wanted to swap it out for something like a 75/25 Argon bottle for my might. It was filled with helium. Any way to swap it?

Unless you know that the person who gave it to you owned the bottle then you don't really know if it is an owned or leased bottle.

The place I use will take bottles in on trade for another bottle. Generally they will give half of what they sell the bottle for in credit.
I have heard that not all places will do that

Is there any writing/stamping with a company name or "lease only" on the neck ring? If there is nothing on the neck ring, then you don't need proof that you own the cylinder. Some places simply may not fill a customer owned cylinder though.

If you can still get proof that you own the cylinder, that's a good idea. Not necessary if it has a blank neck ring, but a good idea nonetheless.

I made that mistake, I traded my owned bottles for full ones and I noticed much later that their name is stamped on the neck. I am guessing if I go else where I mite have problems getting them filled.

That depends on what name is stamped on the ring, and it is often something that will be specific to your location.

True. My local Praxair dealer says that 125 cf cylinders are treated as owner bottles with or without a plain ring. Not sure about larger bottles.

Anything high pressure smaller than 150 are sold
Some companies have tried "lifetime leases" but have not been successful
NCG and some other companies sold 250 cf cyl

Any acetylene 75 cf and smaller is sold
Linde sold some 125 size with welded on valve guards like a propane tank
NCG sold some 125 size with (6R prefix in serial number)

All propane (240 psi tanks) 100 lb and smaller are customer owned
480# and 250 gal and 500 gallon can be rental or Sold
Most propylene (260 psi) are rental
Some companies have sold 27# and 63# cyl

Thats the way it used to be. So many companies have been bought and sold best answer is buy little ones not large ones.

It depends on your LWS.

I know my LWS considers anything under 300CF to be an owner bottle. My LWS would also take any high-pressure bottle (argon, helium, CO2, nitrogen, oxygen) and replace it with any other high-pressure gas I wanted (If I brought in a helium, they would swap it out for the same size of CO2, as long as it was in date and I paid the filling fee on for the gas I am taking home.

Not every LWS is the same. I definitely recommend getting an account and being nice to the guys behind the counter...they have a LOT of leeway on pricing and how you treat them often determines what you will pay. I got an account, even though I pay for my gas every time with a debit card.

All you can really do is go ask. Try to pick the local LWS, over the big names (PRAXAIR, etc.) Their prices are usually better and they seem to be more willing to work with you.

Calling all 244 HP sold cyl. Is going to get your local WS in trouble someday. Sold 244 are actually pretty rare

Praxair actually charges to revalve when you want to change gases. Then they just put it in the MT pile and refill it. Between that and junk fees they make a killing.

Independents are more flexible. For 38 years Ive worked the counter for five independents and outside for three.

Been there. Done that. And, yes, I have the t-shirt.
