Shingles, any best picks

I have to get a new roof on my house before winter, takes away from a few garage projects, but long story short, last winter ice dams, well took a toll.

My Garage is going on 12 years with IKO 25 yr 3 tabs, no complaints in fact when they put them on, I liked the shingle never used before.

House I "think" has CertainTeed, but it was 1998 when we put that on, paperwork is somewhere.

The "shop" I am at has partial Atlas since 2012, so far so good.

My Question, being priced within 10 dollars a square of each other here are my choices:

Owens Corning
CertainTeed Landmark
IKO
Atlas

The roof is a 5/12 pitch nothing crazy. Any Suggestion, horror stories etc

Hmm, well from what I've seen and been around, I'd go Certainteed or Iko, I don't know Atlas so can't say on the last one, and Owens Corning I think is junk, unless it's changed. I hope you're right on the Iko you talked about, our new home has 30 year Iko on it.

Owens is good stuff. Anything with a good warranty and you should be ok. Not that you can get a warranty done but it's good stuff. Something in the 40-50 year range. There's a company from Canada on the market, the may have left it by now. The shingles were oversized, cheap, good warranty, and seemed nice but I always had a feeling about them. Then another store gave us better deals on the name brand stuff so we only used those cheaper shingles a few times.
I don't care for posting on construction subjects because construction is a whole different breed. Any and everything can be done. I'm a fan of Lifetite metal myself.

Our house has GAF that are ~10 years old and we're already looking at replacement. I went with certainteed landmark on the garage and they look great, the house will get landmark pro. The pro has a 15yr streak warranty which is appealing since we're in the trees.

I believe metal roof is around $1.40 a linear foot. The regular stuff is 3 feet wide but with exposed screws. Standing seam is 1 1/2 feet wide. I couldn't tell you how many I've helped put on. Most people don't like metal but I do. It only ***** if the roof is chopped up. The exposed screws are fine as long as they are tight. But standing seam looks better but both are fine. We put the regular metal on everything from one car garages to stuff worth a few hundred grand. I think I've only ever helped with standing seam on porches, massive set of apartments, and I can't think of anything else. I know while I was school my dad put standing seam on a house that was worth 2 million or so. The modern stuff is nothing like the old stuff. You screw or nail one side down and the other side snaps over the nailer on the last piece. None of those clips. And if put on right will stay on fine. No wind issues.

Certain teed is another good shingle company.

Which one has the pink panther on the package? I want to say Owens, whichever it was we used those more than any other shingle.

I do remember a brand that they were using in this richy subdivision that was junk. We never put them on but they paid Dad to fix them. It's cheaper to hire the cheapest people and pay the best to fix the deatails. But for once it was the shingles being bad, some new brand. They were literally coming apart and falling off of the roof after a few months. A few houses had that problem.

Speaking of bad roofers, we've seen Amish use shingles ran sideways for valley metal, they didn't even overlap them. Just butted them together. Brand new few hundred thousand house with a massive leak. We charged more to fix it then they paid the Amish to roof it.

Be sure to look for anti algae ( black streaking) stain control with a streaking warranty.

The best shingle can be the worst nightmare by a quick and dirty install.

Limited experience with metal roof but the two I know had problems with a screw install.......not matter what was done over time it leaked at the screws.

I know there are a lot of choices out there, I over evaluate everything but work hard for my money and with a previous leg injury can't bend to shingle any more! I just have been worried about getting a junk name brand shingle and costing me more down the road!
The contractor I have in mind uses Owens Corning and said he sees less particle separation but that he will install any that I want!

I was also told Tamco is good

iirc, the owens corning oakridge shingles were rated as a best buy from consumer reports a few years back.

Depends on where you live too - here we don't really worry about the brand as the weather typically makes sure no shingle roof makes it to the published life span. In any 20 year cheap shingle life period, you'd be pretty lucky not to have a hail storm beat the thing to death. I've owned houses in Texas since 1975 and have never paid a full price on a re-roof. Just the deductible and maybe some incidentals.

I used IKO on my garage roof and liked them. I got them from a local building supply and they delivered. I think we are close enough to Canada we get the metric ones or something, they were around 39" or so, not the standard 36".

I ran short of enough to do the small roof over the connector to the garage and picked up a bundle of GAF on a Sunday from the orange store. They seemed cheaper and thinner than the IKO and cost more.

GAF. Had my roof done two years ago and going strong. I told my roofer I needed a durable shingle since I go up on the roof in the summer to start/maintain/winterize my swamp cooler. GAF 30-year is what he recommended.

^ ^ ^ This. House with 5/12 roof having ice dams likely has "HOT" attic from poor insulation for the ceiling coupled with poor ventilation.

Also, be sure to REQUIRE proper UNDER-LAYMENT that protects from potential leaks.

Thus, use Ice & Water Shield underlayment instead of tar paper on all the lower areas, valleys, and perimeter.

A poster made me think this? Have you had a jail damage lately? When I did construction insurance jobs were still being done a year or two after the storm hit. If there's an excess of gravel in the gutters than it's typically considered hail damage and if you have insurance it's usually covered.

Great point CNGsaves and OP of the "hot attic" I found the problem! When I was layed up with my bad leg 5 years ago dad PACKED insulation in the eaves and there never was any ventilation from the eve overhang! Way house was built and a total blunder of the times.
Steps Taken:
Removed packed insulation (only 1 side and partial, all where dams were"
Remove Soffit, drill ventilation holes re install soffit
Bad boards will be replaced
Ice guard will be on first 2 maybe 4 feet
Synthetic felt on rest
New Shingles
New ridge vent
Will install baffles in between roof trusses
Will insulate accordingly
