Hmmmmmm, these look interesting. Saw it today on Uncrate. I signed up to be notified when they are available. They're 100% American made, I love how they look - and always a plus when you can support a Detroit company!

http://www.shinola.com/shop/supply/supply-gifts/screwdriver-set.html

Been reading more on the website, kind of a cool story. This is from their "Our Story" portion of the website:

"Why not accept that manufacturing is gone from this country? Why not let the rust and weeds finish what they started? Why not just embrace the era of disposability? And why didn't we buy a warmer coat before we moved here?
Through three Detroit winters, we’ve asked ourselves these questions. And worked not to find our answer, but to build it.
Because we don't think American manufacturing ever failed for being too good. Our worst didn't come when we were at our best. It happened when we thought good was good enough.
It's a tall order to return to form, but we're up for it. We’re starting with the reinvigoration of a storied American brand, and a storied American city. Because we believe in the beauty of industry. The glory of manufacturing.
We know there’s not just history in Detroit, there is a future.
It’s why we are here. Making an investment in skill, at scale. Creating a community that will thrive through excellence of craft and pride of work. Where we will reclaim the making of things that are made well. And define American luxury through American quality."

They've been around for a while with bikes and watches, they're trying to move the watches to all USA components (assembled here) but they've still got a ways to go.

They're pretty active on internet searches, I wouldn't be surprised to see them find this thread.

Wow, wish I could afford one of their watches......a bit out of my budget, but hands down the coolest set of watches I've seen!

My father in law also uses this phrase. I too, did not realize it was a brand.

It was always shoe polish to me.

The watches are really expensive for what they are, a basic quartz movement with some swiss parts. As someone originally from the Detroit area I love that they are trying to bring some money back to the area but all their stuff seems a little over priced for what it is.

Am I missing something? These are the same, run of mill wooden handled screw drivers that are just painted black with their logo press into the wood?

I want to support this company, but this is gouging.

Yeah, Shinola has been around a few years, at least. They started out with watches, which as already mentioned are way overpriced for what they are. Now they've expanded and have turned into more of a marketing based company that will put their name on just about anything that's US made. For example, the screwdrivers are made by Grace and are probably available with the Grace name on them, minus the blackout treatment, for much less. They have a nice baseball glove with their name on it that's actually made by Nokona too.

I'm glad they're trying to bring manufacturing back to Detroit and the USA for sure. They've recently started producing their watch dials in Detroit, for example.

But to me, companies like Shinola are actually part of the problem in this country. Marketing has become much more important than substance and Shinola in general isn't taken very seriously by people that are knowledgeable about what Shinola is selling. The watches usually get very little respect from WIS, for example.

This is what came to mind for me when I saw the title:

The Jerk

Those screwdrivers look nice and remind me of the set I inherited from my grandfather.

when I saw the price I was thinking my computer must have a virus! - I wouldn't give $5 for that set, and $65?

these kind of companies are what make people shy away from "made in USA" ..... ugh!

Stay away from this store!

It's a marketing scheme, not a real store!

It's for trendy people who have money.

This is not about American idealism or quality manufacturing.

They have such a weird variety of goods they are selling - watches, leathergoods, iPhone cases, bicycles, dog beds, guitars, sporting goods, tools, and other random stuff.

They aren't manufacturing all this stuff, they are rebranding it.

So yeah, technically they are supporting USA manufacturing, but they aren't exactly the grass-roots-USA-homemade-built-from-the-ground-up-manufacturing operation that their marketing drivel would have you believe.

This is a marketing and rebranding operation; no way would I buy a tool from them instead of an ACTUAL USA tool manufacturer.

Looks like they just murdered out a set of wood handled screwdrivers with some plasti dip.

I'll stick with my Wihas.

Shinola has been getting a lot of attention here in Detroit. There was even some free product placement in the new Dumb and Dumber movie.

I guess they make nice stuff, but not really my thing... that and I'm cheap.

It is good to see a Detroit company doing well and hiring people though.

My girlfriends father was born/raised in Detroit so he immediately took notice when the company started making products. I think he has 3-4 of their watches along with a handful of other random accessories

The watches are nicely made/finished and seem to warrant the price tag considering a comparable European watch would be in the 2000.00 range. Having them all american made/assembled would be great and hopefully it happens sometime soon.

As for the other items like the screwdrivers, they are made by other US manufacturers and the Shinola name is applied but they do sell items made by others on their website. Not every item is practical but ill always support somebody that wants to manufacture in the USA

Hipsters tend to be neither engineers nor skilled in the actual work. For $70 dollars you'd be better off with just about anything else. Just my $0.02.
