Shipping container shed

I think I just acquired 2 40ft shipping containers to store tractor and such items in. I have goggled and found several ideas I like. One being putting trusses over both of them. I have seen pics using wood trusses but not steel. I know the load goes on the end to support the container above.

How would you go about supporting the steel trusses on them in the center where there isn't any bracing places or upright square tubing.

On the end trusses I thought about a square tube welded on the support and bolt the truss to it. Just unsure in the center.

I built a hunting shack like that for some guys 20 years ago, I just used 3 2x6's to form a beam the length of the container to support the trusses, as far as I know it is still standing.

Down here, its fairly typical to just use full length beams, and fasten the tin roof to them. Trusses wouldnt be a lot different.

This mob have some fancier ideas, if you look through their images.

I've saw some amazing looking house's that probably cost a ton. This is what I had in mind but with steel trusses and only 2 containers.

I wish I had the space for container storage. A pair with trusses over them to form a common roof and center open air storage / parking / work space would be great!

Good luck!

As much as I hate showing anyone this it was a project that was only meant to last 6 months. Just enough time after I shut down my contracting business to sell the house and leave cali........that was 5 years ago now LOL.

SO the original intent was to use two 40's on either side just like what you plan on doing. The day I was going to pour the footings I found out code enforcement outlawed these things and were cracking down. So I backed off on using one for the right side and painted the other camo green........stealth huh :lol_hitti

I ordered a 100mph wind rated RV cover and attached the base plate upright support to the side of the upper rail of the container with 1/2" bolts every 5ft, basically at each truss receiver, the second picture basically shows it (you'll see a small hole). The inside of the container thru bolt is backed up by a 90 degree unitstrut bracket that supports deep strut spanning the width (obviously every 5ft). This allowed me to run/support conduit and hang my lighting from so once again no roof penetrations. Then I used 6 X 6 flashing at the transition under the roofing metal and to the top of the container sealed with mastic so no mechanical attachment means on the container thru the top. So far no leaks.

I've always wanted to do something like this- adding a room simply by adding another container. If I had the land, this would be a plan!

If it was me I think I would order a couple of the carports, cut the legs a little shorter and weld them to the edge of the container. Those containers are very strong and those waffled sides will give lots of strength even in the middle of the side. Those carports do not weigh that much.
So cut the side legs down by about 3-4 ft. Attach to the container and go for it.
Then you can do a shed roof from where the carport roof ends down to the outer edge of the container. This will make it look like a barn which is what I would be looking for and you will have some shading on the top of the containers that will reduce inside tempatures.
I have even though that if I wanted more of a an old barn look that I could attach some barn wood to the outside of the container

Too bad they won't let be build that here.....damn them

Those carports are 600 each around here. I can get some 5 40ft trusses for 1250 plus tin. I found this one online and appears they used red iron.

Be nice to have a 40×40 between them.

It would be really sweet to have three 40' containers set up in a U shape with a common roof. Cut access doors in the sides and you've got almost too much storage and work space.

It's still not a 'shop' as it isn't indoor space, but dang, what a great place to work on equipment in an outdoor environment.

I saw stuff like this all over Iraq. We used shipping containers in every way imaginable. They're really not a bad way to have storage and/or set up a work area if you live out of town where you can do it.

Too bad your not in my area. There are many poultry farmers going out of business and they will give you the buildings for testing them down and removing them. 40 foot trusses only problem they are 300 ft long. You might look in your area for used poultry house trusses to cut down.

I am building a garage 34 x 32 two story. it started with two 20 foot containers with the doors facing the rear, set 18 feet apart. Then I got 18 ft bar joist to put between them. with a few old barn beams I am running the bar joist 12 feet past the containers to several posts that make up the back wall. then I set a 18 foot wide carport on top of the bar joist and the containers. With 14 foot 2x6s I was able to go to the outer edge of the containers to make it a hip roof. The 2nd floor will be 18 x 32 open floor space plus storage on top of the containers. The container doors face the inside of the garage because the rear wall is 12 foot past the back of them. This way when finish the outside with tin you will never see the containers it will look like a pole barn.
