Shipping container storage - resale market?

I know the things always seem to be on Craigslist, but I suspect it would be a bit difficult to actually sell one, given someone would need to move it. My first call to sell a shipping container would be a dealer. They'd pay less, but at least they could pick it up without a hassle.

Yup! when your done, bury it!
Just think, secret entrance, underground fort - you always wanted one when you were a kid. :rocker:

Be very careful backfilling. I had a buddy try to bury one in a hillside as a storm shelter. torqued the **** out of it. They don't have a lot of structural integrity.

A friend of mine owns a fab shop. He has limited shop space so he stores his new steel outside in a sea container.
He cut one side open in two places, the exact dimensions for garage roll up doors. He installed the doors, fabricated steel storage racks, and easily accesses the steel from the side of the container with his fork truck.

I'll bet you can build a nice shed for less cost than a container and have it forever.

No way. I just purchased 2 40’ high cube containers for $3000. With that square footage a shed would cost way more. A 12x16 shed from Home Depot is $2500 and you still have to build it. Containers are the way to go.

See my avatar as the best use of 20' shipping containers. I park my 16' pontoon boat in the space between the containers in the winter.

If your going to keep it for a year, what you loose in resale will about equal what you will pay in rent.
Resale in my part of Tx is easy..they are a common short to long term storage option.

And if your buying it, you can MOD it tastefully that will not effect resale.

I use them at work for storing training bikes, our insurance company insist on "triple lock" protection, so I weld on two lock enclosures that hold Mul-T-Lock puck locks, then use Mul-T-Lock pad locks on the standard handle locks.

You can also paint it to better blend in with the home surroundings, and with only minor cost and work you can add a faux roof, siding, or build an entryway in front of the doors that both "hides" the metal doors, but also doubles as a weather entrance better keeping rain from getting in the open doors.
Yes its might cost more then a stick shed, but the container will be a more theft proof option, available to use NOW, and then beautify as needed/ wanted , modify as desired as you go.
We contract with a container company that does retail sales to move ours when we change location, over the years its cost anywhere from $100-$250.
Moved one just last month, and it was cheaper to hire a out of town company to drive down for the job then it was a local one..Point is, shop around.

Cost to drop one from a roll back type delver at time of purchase always seems to be more then just moving one later.. and if you need more drop off placement skill and ability than a roll off will do, the price goes up to being a fork lift or Crane which I had to do once as the only place the property manager would let us put the conex was inaccessible to the roll off. ..That one cost me almost $900

Around here, those things are constantly showing up in the online auctions. I hardly think that resale would be an issue.

The way those things are coming into this county, I think in a few more years, they'll be paying US to take them.

I think it a non-issue, 'cause once you have it you won't want to get rid of it! :lol_hitti

If you do any sort of fabricating, they make a great place to keep your material out of the way and easily accessible. This one is in my shop and has a sheet storage rack on the left, tubing storage on the right and shelves with bin storage in the back. I added a couple of light fixtures inside and fabbed a mezzanine floor above to store more 'stuff'

They're handy.

You can stack them nine high. No bug will eat the wood. Every part passes the 1000 hour salt spray test. One trippers are an excessive expense. Snow and ice shield will stop leaks for long, long time. You can insulate inside or out. Paint it and it can disappear. Weld some tabs and clad it in siding. Wire it for a few outlets and install some bright *** LEDs.

Do not use any Master brand lock. Buy Asus or Abloy.

Dime a dozen around here... with a few major ports and tons of transport companies around here. they are all over craigslist or from the transport companies. new, gently used, truly abused. can do most anything with them.

You are right - there are oodles of options for what is a good starting point. A google/pinterest search shows just how many creative ways people are using these containers. Considering we will continue to have trade deficits for quite some time, these excess containers will continue to be repurposed.

I avoid Master locks unless I have no choice or the item isn't all that valuable and I need a "deterrent" and not a "lock". I haven't had any experience with Asus or Abloy, so thanks for the recommendation. Not to highjack my own thread, but I've used a Stanley lock and pewag chains.

The good thing about the container, it has a lock box and it will be in the back yard behind a locked RV gate.

pulled it all the way up - plenty of room. Going to store a few things in front of it. It was easy climbing out.
