SHMO's 24x25 Crafstman garage

Here is a closeup of the stairs. I sheeted everything with MDF, added a bunch of button head wood plugs and used filler and caulking to smooth everything out. My intentions are to make the garage look somewhat industrial. I will eventually faux paint the stairs to make them resemble an old rusty steel staircase.

Here are a few pics of the room over the garage. It's roughly 12'x21'. That will be my next interior project. Hopefully this winter I will be able to get a start on that.

Garage got some used cabinets. I also fabbed up some additional cabinets that will receive the same doors. FINALLY got some countertop to work on...haha The whole thing will get the industrial look eventually with faux rivets and paint.

I even got inspired and helped the neighbor lady out by building her a short fence and arbor. It was the least I could do for her considering how she puts up with all my construction noise. She was super happy.....Good neighbor bonus points

Ahhh the outside of the place. I FINALLY made a decision on the stone for the exterior. I am glad I waited so long because I ended up finding a great source for natural stone veneer that I could actually afford. I think it blends really well the the style and colors of the house. It also ties in pretty good with my stamped concrete.

I figured I would tackle manufactured stone, but I would probably be better off leaving the real stone to the pros. Therefore, I decided to farm this project out. A stone mason I am not.

It is still a work in progress, but it should be finished up within the next week or so.

Here are a few pics of the Baja. I spent roughly a year building it from a rusted out body I picked up for $60. I put it together so that my Dad and I could roam the desert near San felipe Mexico. My Dad has since passed away. Today, the car spends most of its life residing in the trailer. I didn't even use it once this year

It is a full tube frame, mid travel setup. I chopped the top off it and did some major sheetmetal work before paint to make it a dedicated ******* car. It cycles about 13 inches of travel. Wheelbase is extended 8 inches and track width being about 7 inches wider, 4 wheel discs, built 091, Porsche CV's, Bilsteins, full interior, bla bla bla. I originally set it up with a 1915 aircooled motor, but that wasn't getting it done. I later decided to go liquid cooled and computer controlled. I used a late model GM Ecotec motor. I think I may have been one of the first people around to swap one into a Baja. I couldn't be happier with the performance. Now some pics...

My Architect planned the kitchen layout. Originally, I questioned the corner pantry setup and 45 degree island. Now however, I wouldn't change it for the world. The pantry eliminates the need for cumbersome and awkward corner cabinetry and adds a ton of storage space in the kitchen. It actually brought my costs down slightly as well. I altered the height of the cabinets and pantry to give it some visual interest. I also added the same crown moldings to the pantry to tie it all together. I am really happy with how it turned out, from the looks to the function. Everyone who sees it likes the configuration. Actually living with it makes me appreciate it even more. It's a very good use of space. Chalk one up for my architect!

The garage isn't HUGE by any means. if I were to do it all over again I would possibly add 10 more feet towards the back. The width is fine. My use for the garage is mainly for storage and play space. I have a workshop nearby that I use for doing the dirty work.

Luckily, my brother in law has a custom handrail company. I was able to borrow his shop to fabricate the handrails for the garage staircase. They are all aluminum with textured powdercoat. You can see in the pics how I offset them. That worked out really well, although it had me scratching my head on doing the math to fabricate them....darn geomtery!

Thank you to everyone for the kind compliments. I really enjoy the details in things. In reality, my house and garage is a pretty simple structure. I knew going into it that I had to focus on adding the details to make it interesting. Fortunately, I was able to build it in my spare time while I was living elsewhere and paying no rent. It has been roughly 5 years in the making, and I still have a long way to go.

Thanks again for acknowledging my work. I sometimes wonder if my wife even knows what color the house is on the outside....haha

Way to go SHMO! You've got SKILLS! Personally, I'd like to see more pictures if you have them. From the time you bought the property, clearing the land, harvesting the cedar (especially the sawmill), building the house, garage and shop, fence, neighbors arbor/gate, and all. The inside of your shop, toys, tools, and anything else you care to share. Where is your campground? Is your garage upstairs going to be a guest bedroom or what? I could see the front window changed out to an arched cedar barn loft door fitted with a 'hill climb' ramp to run the turbo'd sled up and down to its loft home. LOL Wouldn't that be a challenge to run!

Seriously, can't wait to see more pictures of your handiwork and I'm pretty sure the other GJ members would like to see more too.

Wow... It makes me really happy to know that people appreciate the same details that I do. I have always loved the craftsman style. When I started my build I tried my best to do a more modern version of the North West Craftsman. To be honest, the house would be a very dull home given the basic architecture. It is literally a couple boxes with no complicated roof lines to be found.

To answer a couple questions, I still have the Baja even though I have not unloaded it from the trailer in over a year. As for pictures, I will post the last few remaining ones I have on hand.

that ships ladder is a pretty neat deal. What a space saver! It sort of reminds me of those old library ladders that had wheels on them. But, could you imagine trying to carry anything sizable up that thing, like a couch or TV?....haha

i work in ship repair and routinely carry heavy things up ships ladders. the best part of true ship ladders (on a ship i mean) is the ladder is held in with four pins. pull the pins and move the ladder out of the way, hang a chainfall from a pad eye above the center of the 'hole'. maybe not the most practical for routine daily use, but a great space saver and good for rigging heavy items between decks.

btw.... awesome craftsmanship. forgive me if this question has already been asked, but what do you do for a living? looks like you have some nice skills there.

In this pic, almost in the dead center, you can see a long strip of light color. That is a tarp that is roughly 12'x80' that I wrote in 9 foot tall letters, "WILL YOU MARRY ME". My then girlfriend and I had been dating for a couple years and it was time for me to pop the question. I chartered out a 4 seat prop plane from the local airport to take us up. My cover story was that we needed some aerial photos of our campground, which can be seen as the majority of the tree and grass area in the photo. I told her we needed the pictures for advertising. When we flew over, I pulled out the ring. Standing around the tarp was both of our families. When we returned there was already an engagement party in progress. At that time, I had no plans to build a house. Roughly two years later, when my wife and I were expecting our first child, that became the location we chose for our home. The clump of tree just above that tarp featured 43 Cedar and about 6 or 7 Douglas fir trees. Once I had them on the ground I had a friend mill up 10,000 board feet of lumber. That lumber was used all over the exterior of the house and even the fence separating my property from the neighbor.
