Depends on what you're working on. I have VW factory tool strut nut sockets, which are just deep sockets with a large section of the side cut out, for a hex key to go through to hold the shock piston. I often also use a spark plug socket (With external hex, held by a wrench.) and a long hex socket driver passing through it to hold the shock piston.

Most techs hammer on the strut with air tools, whether they'll admit it or not. In my shop, I take the time to use a wrench and a hex key, or VW factory tools, or a GW pass-thru when there's room.

the regular gearwrench sockets don't look deep enough for what I need. How big is the pass thru on the extension? The strut has one of the oval ends not a hex on it so I need to use something like this http://buy1.snapon.com/catalog/item.asp?P65=&tool=all&item_ID=12159&group_ID=1632&store=&dir=catalog
Would this fit inside the gearwrench extension?

I tried using my impact to tighten the nut but the shaft just kept spinning, so I think I need to do it the right way and hold the end of the shaft.

Deep offset box end wrench might work for final tightening. Though if you've impacted it down it's probably tight enough already.

9/16" inside clearance on my 3" extension. None of my shouldered sockets would fit in there, but my 3/8" 1/4" drive socket did fit inside it. You're not getting anything with a 3/8" drive in there.

I tried to use a deep offset wrench but I cant fit it in there because it is too far down / narrow. I can only fit a deep socket in there. The impact didn't tighten it down it just spun the whole shaft around.

That is what I figured. All of the shock nut sockets from snap-on are 3/8ths drive...

So when transferring the spring and top mount from the old strut to a new strut, Is it bad then to hammer the top nut down with an Impact?

I made do once using a deep socket and a long hex bit socket on a ratchet. Used a strap wrench to turn the socket. Not pretty, ideal, or fast, but it worked.

You'll turn the piston shaft that way, causing wear on the seals and you can't torque it properly. I've never heard of it being a big deal, but I do it by hand whenever I can. Always sell a new top mount for NVH, re-using them will cost you more money than it will save your customers.

Everybody says not to do it, but Im pretty sure everybody forced to work flat rate does it. When I was working in a shop as an apprentice of sorts, this is how they were done. It's actually really difficult to do this by hand sometimes. One of the arguments against doing it by hand was that it is probably more dangerous for the operator to use a big breaker bar/ torque wrench because there's a tendency to pull it out of the compressor, regardless of the little safety chains.

For this reason alone, I'd prefer the impact.

yup its a *****, i did it with an impact socket on a pipe wrench and a hex key through the middle, if i did more id just weld a socket to a wrench for each size you need

I know a lot of times I would use the old lock nut with a little blue locktite, cause it would run down easier.
But I usually did use an impact, (unless I was working without air) that's why I asked.

Is this a one time thing or do you work in a shop and need a set to do all different sizes? What size socket is it?

I have this one, http://www.autobodytoolmart.com/cta-universal-strut-nut-remover-a450-p-16507.aspx that has worked for me, also have a few other ones I picked up over the years, all over seas stuff.

This might work for you depending on what size the nut is, http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000BPASAQ/?tag=atomicindus08-20. They sell them at all home stores.

Well I don't work in a shop but I do a bit of side work for friends and family etc... I looked into a similar kit as that CTA one (it was a florida tools brand) but the nut that I really need it for is a 17mm so the hex adapter they have wont work. I am thinking to just get hazet 17mm socket and the one insert that I need and just order the others as I need them but I dont know of a distributor I can get them quickly from. Chadstoolbox is the only one I found and it says like 6 week lead time for hazet tools on their website. Being able to only buy the ones I need would save a lot compared to their kit since they want around 120 bux for that ratchet which obviously I could get by without.

As I usually install new struts I use channel locks on the shaft and a !/2 inch drive deep impact on the nut.

Do you have a welder? Cut a deep 17mm socket and weld a bigger nut onto it. You can use a wrench to turn the nut/socket and it would be open so you could get your insert bit in it.
