Shocking day at the welding supplier

I loaded up my empty SS tri-mix bottle and my Argon bottle to go to town and swap for filled bottles. My normal go to supplier had neither gas, nor any idea when. Went to the next and was able to pick up a trimix for $245, an Argon for $175, and a #10 spool of 308 wire for $125. They say you have to spend money to make money. I spent around $680 (including some SS tube) to weld up a shower bench support for $375 and fix an aluminum stand for the high school (for free). At this rate being a millionaire is a long ways off.

Not if you own the welding supply.

Wow. Prices are just going thru the roof on everything!

Argon prices shouldn't be that bad. Geez they make the stuff from the air! When you fractionate air once the nitrogen and oxygen are removed (huge commercial demands) what's left is 93% argon. They should be able to almost give it away and still make money.

They call it a "trace gas"....you know....

Like "vintage"..... :ROFLMAO:

Every time you go...weld rod is more. Acetylene is more...Argon is more....

You price grinder wheels, of late?

No, but every thing I've tried to buy of late is "supply line problem". Unless it's fentanyl, tatoo's, or CBD- those don't seem to have any problems. I couldn't even find shoe laces for my athletic shoes a few weeks ago. Ugh!
Lack of vintage - due to labor shortage! :lol_hitti

Damn walkers you didn’t even get a reach around. The next time you’re in need let me know. I’ll get you together with my praxair salesmen. I don’t even remotely pay anything close to what you just did. The only downside is his store is basically at 43rd ave n Buckeye.

Shoot, that's in the industrial district! Close to the Amazon fulfillment center?

Yeah, the Prax up here had none either, I called. He had a little 50 footer, but you end up giving you K cylinder away, because ‘we are not in the business of buying cylinders’,then buying it back when you are done with the 50 foot cylinder and are ready to ‘upgrade’ the cylinder back to the K.

I’m lucky with my local guy. We have a national account and drop some fairly serious coin with them so there’s no games played on my end. The offers there bud and I’m in and out of here multiple times a day usually.

After I got back I first had to drag out my spool gun, miller 30A, and try to remember which machine I use it on (XMT 304, it is a direct connect using the WC-24), then remember how to set it up. It took me a handful of welds on some scrap to achieve decent welds. I was welding up a glorified aluminum folding scaffold. I had two separate welds that had me chasing my tail. Grind out and rewelded 3-4 times before they stopped turning to ****.
They used screws to hold the platform down, just regular pan head self drilling screws, but they had a torx looking head, but no torx size fit it. No go for Allen’s either. Ended up having to vise-grip out a dozen screws.

once that was out of the shop I turned my attention to my CNC plasma machine. I sent the controller back to the manufacturer because the serial port had gotten worn out over the last 10 years. I hooked it all up only to get the message ‘incorrect version of controller software’. It was telling me I needed to update. The computer is old enough that it wants to connect to the internet via dial up connection. I cringe having to ever connect it because of this. I had to disconnect everything and drag it all into the house and connect it using an Ethernet cable, then try to remember how to get it to connect. Only took an hour, then 5 minutes to update.

Tomorrow I get to cut up a bunch of 304 stainless and try to remember how to weld that using MiG (it marginally confuses me every time because I keep the bottle on the back of my TIG machine, and I do it so infrequently).

Well I never noticed but ya I guess it is. I equate to being close to Maricopa county jail complex....my second home.

Oops did I say that out loud 🤭
Only aware because my SIL lives in Goodyear so I'm semi-familiar with the locale.

Look at your invoice? Did they hit you with a hazmat fee? Praxair here does that. Even on welding rod. It's just a way to jack up the prices. Barnes does not. It pays to shop around.
