Shoe rack: Anyone have any good ideas?

One wife, 3 kids produces a lot of shoes in the garage. I need to get them off my steps into the house. Any ideas?

Requirements:

1) Must mount on the wall
2) Would like the shoes to mount on an angle or vertical to reduce the depth of the rack since it will be mounted on the wall next to the stairs or close to it.
3) Could be made wood or metal
4) Could be premade or I could build it

Anyone build or buy anything cool for the garage?

Go check out Closet-Maide selection at Lowes or Home Depot ( or probably any other home improvement store ) . They have brackets that will allow you to mount wire shelving at an angle and does not require support to the floor. As long as you don't put shoes on the floor under it, mopping and vacuuming is a breeze.

Shoes belong in the house or mud room. Cars and tools belong in the garage. LOL. I feel your pain and would look at any of the local big box hardware stores or something like california closet .

We went to Menards and got a nice black wire basket that you screw in to the wall and use for all of our sports gear. The sides allow you to store all of your bats. We even use it to hang all of our portable chairs.

Here is what we do, cost about 20 something each at Lowes. As you can see problem is getting everyone to put the shoes in it I could pretty easily hang it on the wall but don't mind it how it is.

Yeah, go with storage cubbies. They're easy to clean, but more importantly, easy to use. Kids (and adults!) tend not to use organizers and de-clutterers if they're not easy to use.

Yup, that's what I'm thinking. A bonus - throw a towel underneath and there's no need to worry when wet soggy snowy shoes are thrown on in the winter. Can't say the same about a particle board shoe cubby.

I am thinking of getting some tall lockers with shelves in them to put in my garage. I have seen several sets cheap on Craigslist that have been used in a school or gym. My thought is to paint them up cool or let the kids paint them to personalize and let them use it to put their ballbag, shoes, backpack, whatever they tend to dump as they come in. That way, as they go out, they can open the locker, grab what they need and off they go! Cool and functional and not too "pottery barn"- it is a garage.

When I did my garage remodel I knew I had to handle the shoe problem- my stair looked like a Mosque at morning call with all the shoes hanging everywhere.

I also didn't like the stairs that were there- so I solved two problems with one project: new stairs, and an integrated storage place for shoes, dog-walking stuff, and on the other side, storage for odd-shaped things like track umbrellas.

Painted it to match the rest of the garage.

Please, I'm a better driver than a carpenter, so don't laugh at the pathetic construction!

In our mud room, I installed Elfa shelving from the container store, you can space the shelves out at different heights to accomodate, boots, shoes, etc. and get them cut to whatever length you want.

I recently built one for the mud room. 2x doug fir with 1/4" steel rods. Four levels and four pair wide. I'm going to build a tray that will fit on the top for gloves/hats/debris. My daughter just ordered one at 2'x4'.

I've got a 2x3 (6 total) cubby unit similar to others posted above except for the number and size of the cubbys. Individual spots are roughly 12x12x12.

I use it to store my spray paint, but I think it was really made for shoes.

Personally I'd be looking for something like that.


Or thinking vertical, what about a bunch of coat hooks? Simple to install and you can just hang the shoes. Thinking the kind shaped of sort of like like half a banana so the shoes point toe up.

You could probably make something like the top half of this hook yourself, and they wouldn't stick out too far into the stairway.

The IKEA shoe drawer nicely fits a couple jugs of oil. Easily removable and cleanable.

Eventually I would imagine that would mark up shoes. Plus depending on how heavy/long the shoe is one would start getting a crease on it. I don't think I'd ever use anything like that. Looks cool but doesn't seem practical to me at all.

When we had our closets done in the bedroom we had them put in a spot for shoes. I wanted mine angled down. My wife wanted a wall for her shoes. She can put about 3 pairs deep 3 or 4 pairs wide, where I can only put three pairs side by side.

I'll snap some pics when I get home later.
