Skunks have been around the house for a couple of weeks now.Lots of rabies this year so I went on safari tonight.About 9pm they came out .I chased them into a whistle tube with my golf cart . Two of them ,tails high in the air. I would wait for one to come out and fire about 4 shots from my 22. Neither ever sprayed and there is so much hair to meat ratio ,i dont know if I hit them or just cut their hair. I clip ,about 12 rounds and I was out.; I came inside. Dang, that was fun.:lol_hitti

well i agree with what you did, good for you. I hope it doesn't turn into a how are you such a terrible person thread. If you have a pond set a live trap on the bank tie a rope to the trap throw it across the pond. When you have a skunk in the trap simply pull the rope therefore dragging the trap into the water. The skunk will drown and you dont have to get sprayed or shoot up your trap. It works well so ive heard.... i would never.

Jack Daniels goes well with those critter shoot outs....:lol_hitti:thumbup:

No skunks around here so far, but I've been shooting racoons about every weekend the past few months. They are also known to be carriers of rabies.

As bad as I'm shooting , you would think I got an early start with old Jack.

I like the trap on a rope trick. Got a couple of thieves I would like to try that on at the ranch.

I used to have a Border Collie that had a hate on for skunks after being sprayed as a pup. He would "corner" them in the open by going nose to nose with them, then circling to stay that way when they tried to switch around to "aim."
When he started barking, I would take the 12 gauge and a flashlight, go out and shoot the skunk right behind the head severing the spine. There was never any smell, none ever sprayed and I killed dozens of them during one particularly bad summer.

Since I live in the city, I can't use firearms.....Soooooo I use a paint ball gun. I have the option of fullauto which really gets the little bastigens moving, or semi auto, which if its daylight is a whole bunch of fun hittin them in the ***. I usually never see them again. Either way If I see them again..... they get the same treatment.

As a kid I would get them in the traps quite often. By accident I found that if I shot them in the throat they would bleed to death and not spray.

Had a serious Varmit problem last summer. The Varmits were digging up my lawn Big Time. So I set out a Trap (cage) and baited it with Peanut Butter. Turned out the Varmits were Skunks. I had no choice but to get the Pellet Gun out as the City would not dispose of them for me.

Problem is once you trap them, you have to shoot them,..or get sprayed. And when you shoot them they spray. Then you have to dispose of them.

Anyway, I trapped two skunks and disposed them within three days and the problem of torn up yard ended. But the smell was absolutely sicking. It was so strong you not only smelled it you could taste it.

We had a critter problem last fall. We live in a larger city, with our house backing up to a river. In about three weeks I trapped 16 raccoons, 2 ground hogs, 3 possums, and 5 skunks. They were all trapped using a live trap. Starting out with just the typical trap, I caught several critters before my first skunk.

I read on the internet and watched you tube about throwing a blanket over them and transporting them some where else. I got the blanket part done but, just could not go any farther. The missus researched it the same as I and thought the blanket was a good idea too, untill it came time to lift a covered trap with a live skunk in it. She nixed idea number two, about putting the whole trap in a water filled garbage can. In the end the first one caught was let go.

One buddy that works for the county parks system, told me if you kill them, you have to kill the dead instantly or there is a good chance they will spray. One other buddy has a metal brake and I bent some metal to cover the trap. I had to move the trip rod of the trap inside, but it works great.

The first three were small, about the size of a house cat. Once we were out in the country they did not seem all that mad, after the pickup ride, and needed a little bit of guidance to come out. The last one was about the size of a large raccoon, when I opened that trap to let it go, it came out like a missle, four feet out of the trap, and stood its ground and stomped. Three freinds were with me, and this was not what any of us expected after dealing with the first three. We were running and bumping into each other like it was godzilla. When it figured out that we were pansies it just walked away.

My buddies keep talking about dealing with a live skunk is getting a punch in their mancards. None have sprayed yet, thankfully.

Go-Jo is very effective for removing skunk spray; the spray is oil based and Go-Jo cuts it. I used it on a concrete floor where I has set a live trap. (If you use a live trap, secure a long chain to it first.)

Skyking, I think you need some shooting lessons.

Luckily for me, Bode listens well enough that when I spotted a skunk in the yard the other night, he didn't chase after I yelled at him.

I had a skunk problem like yours and then later a porcupine problem. I mounted a light on my 12 gauge so I could use both hands - I'd rather shoot them with a long gun from further away. Never managed to spot the skunk but it worked great for the porcupine.

Aim carefully and shoot. That is the only solution I know for skunks. My Dad and my Brother lost 2 very expensive bulls to rabies from skunks. Around here, rabies affects a high percentage of the population of the skunks, so every skunk you see needs to die.
After losing his expensive bull, my Brother always carried his.22 handgun in his pickup. He was good with it. I watched him take a skunk on the run at 50 yards time after time. They seldom got away from him once he picked up his handgun. And, after he started cleaning up the skunks, he lost no more expensive bulls.

His motto was, "no skunk left behind................alive."

Would a .22 with rat-shot kill a skunk? Give you a better chance of hitting it...

Just to be safe though I think a shotgun would be better...

Years ago one of my sons and I came across a skunk in a field while hunting squirrels. He wanted to shoot the skunk to make a hat. He got it with one shot to the head and I made sure he followed thru with cleaning and tanning the hide. Did make a nice pelt but was too small for a hat.

.

It would take a good hit to kill one with bird shot. It is risky at best. You would more likely just wound him. You want him dead. Use long rifle ammo or hollow point long rifle. A skunk is so slow, you almost can't miss them with a rifle, and even a pistol in the hands of a marksman makes the job fairly easy.

.410 shotgun is the best thing for skunks, very little noise and not much chance of a
ricochet. Little known fact is that a .410 shoots as hard as a 12 gauge, just has less
shot.

A shotgun is pretty useless if you have to take a 50-100 yd shot. The popular .22 rifle still works best as an all around pest killer.
I've never owned a .410. There is nothing a .410 can do that a 12 gauge can't do better. A skunk can't be too dead.

You will have to define "hard". If you mean speed you are correct. If you mean more energy at the target you have to calculate in the mass of the projectiles (E=0.5*M*V^2).

Most of the shotguns and pistols shoot with roughly the same VELOCITY (also called speed). Usually around 700-850 feet per second. Shotguns have heavier and more projectiles (bullets, birdshot, ...). Magnum pistol rounds have a speed of around 1200-1800 feet per second. Rifles are MUCH faster than that.

One year, we trapped 22 skunks and put the cages into the ditch and let them drown. Once they were dead, we put them into a garbage bag and in the dumpster. Turns out that one wasn't quite dead and scared the **** out of my wife when she opened the dumpster lid. Used a revolver with .22 shorts to avoid ricochet damage.

CB caps (Subsonic, accurate, and quiet), Scoped and carefully sighted .22 rifle, and head shots. Or a scoped spring rifle. Either is good out to about 60 ft. (sight the gun for the distance you are shooting) Anything that wounds them WILL make them spray.

And OP; work on your shooting technique, 12 rounds should have been 4-8 skunks...

Around the house; Cayenne pepper makes a great repellant as vermin like that live by their noses, and once they start getting a lot of that up their nose, they wile leave. Is less effective/expensive if you get a lot of rain. I buy min in bulk at Smart and final (big several pound bag; lasts me several years.)

I went out this morning to find , nothing ,not a hair . In my defense I was shooting a 22 pistol and it was dark enough that they just looked like shadows. I know , a miss is a miss......actually 12 misses is 12 misses.
I dont own a .410 but tonight I'm going out with my 12 Ga. with #4 shot.
I was only about 6' away shooting at each as they popped their heads out.
It was a lot of fun.

Here is one idea I learned for skunks: Take a 50 gal plastic barrel cut the top off about 8 inches down, fill about half full with water. Place newspaper over the top in such a way it makes a false floor, lean a 2x6 ramp up to the top, place some dry cat food in the center of paper. The idea is a skunk will walk up the ramp and fall into the barrel it is deep enough they will drown and no smell. Key point don't fill barrel to much or they can grab the edge and get out.

just a point that i feel needs to be made again. a .410 shotgun does not hit as hard as a 12g...

may have the same velocity, but with a .410 depending on range, you may hit with just a couple pellets, as where a 12g at the same range will hit with more than double pellets or more. each pellet has its own trajectory and energy to be transferred to the target. ten pellets will not hit as hard as 20, or 30. plain and simple. and it is the same for all ranges from the muzzle out to last effective range, only the 12g will have a longer effective range..

that said, a .410 with 3" larger shot, or #4 or #2 buckshot would be fine for skunk. racoon work in short range situations. anything over 30 or so yards calls for a rimfire rifle, .22lr minimum, .22 mag better, and .17hmr with XTP bullet would be ideal, simply because they are laser like accuracy, and a head shot would be pretty simple if it wasnt running.

shoot skunks in the lung/heart from 50-100 yards away. Thats what I do when I trap in the winter. 9/10 times they wont spray. If you head shoot them about 7/10 times they will spray.

If you could somehow make a little catapult trap that would fling the skunk in the air, you could be shooting skunk *****!

Sorry, just had to say it... lol.

There's a BUNCH of videos out there on YouTube that use clay throwers to get rid of squirrels. It would probably work on skunks too but you'd have to wait a lot longer.

My back yard is a whack a vole shooting gallery lately. I popped two right from the bedroom slider this morning before work.
I think my kill count is just under thirty so far this summer.
