How man have lists of great ideas they have found on here in a nice format? I have seen tons of great ideas on here, but now that I am building my shop it is hard to weed through the thousands of threads and find them all. If you have any running lists of good ideas or a thread with them please post. Thanks guys. My little getaway is 26*40*12 with a little loft on top. :)

I use excel every day at work, and know a few tricks...
However, I just save pictures for my "list" of things I'd like to do.

This is simular but a little off this topic, I don't keep a list of things I find to do here, but I have a horrible habit of writing notes about things I find online(part numbers, sizes, specifications, that kind of thing) and having all these little notes laying around my desk so now I have a word document called desk notes on my desktop and when I want to remember something I just add it to my file on the desktop instead of having all kinds of notes at the desk, keeps my wife happier.

Lists are an essential part of life it seems. Sometimes I find old fashioned pen and paper are faster/better as a computer is not always on or around at the time I get a brainstorm.

I usually have multiple lists on the same page:
1) garage to do
2) House to do
3) "go buy this"

paper or notes can get lost often so I've moved to a clip board, working nice right now. I have not tried the small spiral pad thing yet, I like full pieces of paper for some reason.

I'm sure most will attest as well:
DRY ERASE boards RULE! Find the biggest one you can.
Also corkboard and tacks for all those hand written notes, receipts you havent filed away yet.

I usually use Word to maintain my To-Do List, but Excel works well too.

Funny story -
At our old house, I'd keep my To-Do List hung on the inside of the pantry door. Debbie's sister thought that was a great idea, so she went home and typed up a list for her husband. Needless to say, he was pissed off that she did that. So she asked Debbie how she got me to agree to having a To-Do List. She told her sister that I'm the one who made the list!

And I bought my brother-in-law a beer to to smooth him over.

Whats the story with the book ? where you writting one on Garages ?

SteelArt

I was compiling notes and photos for myself so that when the time came for the build of my garage I would have all my notes and photos in one place.

Three years ago I had 115 pages of notes in a Word document and 68 MBytes of photos saves/copy/pasted into a PowerPoint file. I actually started editing the notes into formal English. Then life got in the way.

Toodledo is a very nice free web based tool for keeping notes/list. Many smartPhones/ipods etc have an application to interface with Toodledo. There are many others but I tried several and like Toodledo the best.

For taking more complex notes and logging research in a multimedia setting on a computer you might want to investigate microsoft "OneNote" or EverNote. Also keep in mind that MS now offers a free web based version of their "MS Office" suite of tools.

Well every garage build is different the best way is to not force the idea but gradually create the list. You may already have one of the really good ideas you remember write those down first and then when you find a new one compare it to the ones you have written down so that don't overlap or become insignificant. I remember when I did my build I would watch HGTV with my wife and talk about the thing we like and get rid of the garbage ideas.

i have dry erase boards in the garage and in my reloading room.
helps me keep track of stuff i need to do, replace, or buy.

especially in the garage, as i run across supplies that are low, modifications to my s-10, parts list, and what to do next list i write it down. sometimes it may be weeks before i "need" to do what i have written down.

i started using dry erase boards when we were racing, had one on the inside of the trailer door, for prerace prep at the track. as we finished each task, it got checked off in a different color.
kept another one back in the shop for the "to do" list. we came and went at all hours of the day and night sometimes, and it was the only way to remember what you're doing at 3am.
