This is NOT mine, it's just something I came across that I thought was of interest.

Its a very common way to build a small portable forge. My forge that I'm building is a bit bigger than that but is also a dry bottom draught forge so works in the same way.

Pretty neat. Many hotrodders, myself included, would cringe to see a Buick finned drum sacrificed that way but maybe we can console ourselves that it was already unusable for hotrods by the time it was made into a tool.

I have to say I felt the same way. What a waste of a Buick drum :(. Would have to have been badly damaged to be used for that, but then given that it is a Buick drum is sure makes it look good as a forge compared to any other drum.

One of the best BBQs I ever had was off a 18 inch Truck drum made into a burner.
All that cast iron held a lot of heat a long time.

(I do think that blower is a little over sized.
I have seen them done with a burned out portable hair dryer on a foot switch.
They seem to work fine.
Check out your local resale shop.)

Those old Buick drums were aluminum, with a cast iron liner. Lots of other cars and trucks had finned cast iron drums like this one.

Looks exactly like the rear drum on my '87 3/4t Suburban... so that would be a 14 bolt rear end... Well spotted that man!

I have a 14 bolt, a Dana 70, and an Eaton HO52 which all have brake drums which look like that.

looks like a generic fined cast iron GM drum to me. buick made the collectible 45 fin al drums in the early 60s and the later 90 fin drums (tech better for cooling (heat transfer) but not as cool looking) in the mid 60s. so the forge is a good idea and no $100 buick drum was harmed.
