I have had some requests to post a build thread on the paint booth I am currently building. I have a unusual shop(see my shop post) unfortunately... Both a blessing and curse I only have a 8' ceiling so buying a booth is out of the question. We build cabinets, tile and trim houses so I really only spray latex or other water based finishes. Anyways I have been spraying in the back room of my shop (40x84') for a little while and it's just to big to control.

So we started framing, I chose to do a base layer of OSB painted with a clear fire retardant, followed by two layers of taped and mudded 5/8. This way I have a way of mounting things where ever I choose with out worrying about hitting a stud.

I ended up using a 36" fire rated door I had left over from a job. We did end up framing for a 8' door so I can change my mind but I only have a limited amount of time for this project as I have a job coming up I'd like to use it for. Booth is 16'x20'

The ideal is to the left of the door build a intake filter housing approximately 6'x6' or so as it will fit in combination with the door in the 8' rough opening we framed for a larger door if ever needed. Again I spray cabinets so I may never need a larger door.

I made a paint boot from a cardboard appliance carton. It works really well. After filtering through several filters, the repurposed range hood vents to outside. The total cost was about $25.
I have painted hundreds of small parts in this booth.

We added a 1/4" thick tempered window. Everything is sanded and painted in fire retardant paint. And It's also trimmed. I added 1x10 skirting to cover the block foundation along the outer two walls

I added the 24" explosion proof axial fan. The plan was to recirculate the air in the back room as to not loose all my heat. We also plan on adding a second fan out the back wall in case we spray anything solvent base. Or we may fab a duct to direct air outside when needed or recirculate. Not sure yet.

I than installed unistrut on the ceiling with trollys so I can hang material to be painted. I originally installed vapor proof lights but I felt the light wasn't as good as these LEDs I had left over from the shop. So the vapor proofs are going back. I installed these lights temporarily untill I make some money back to buy explosion proof. They are expensive. I also have a commercial electrician friend looking for used explosion proof receptacles. I used a rotary laser to install the lights perfectly.

I built a small table for filling paint, and added a fire extinguisher. I live in a rural area and have well water so a sprinkler system won't be easy or cheap. Anyways this is what I got so far. Still have to build a exhaust filter housing across the lower back wall. I have to build a intake filter housing next to the door. I bought a bunch of 20x20s. Than lastly paint the floor with a clean coat of grey.

If you are doing any commercial spraying you may need an air make up system as well. Had a friend who did work on contract in the wood industry. He built a spray room from permitted plans and when the inspector came to visit, he asked where the air makeup system was. It wasn't on the plans that had been approved but he would not sign off unless there was an air makeup system installed. My friend had to cough up another 40K for that to get approval. They get fussy about those things.

I'm not sure how all the Amish furniture shops in our area get that accomplished.

Yeah, unfortunately there are a lot of rules wether you spray water based or solvents. I have looked at make up air and know we need to plan for it. For now we will just open one of the outside doors. Fortunately this is my private residencey in a rural area. I would like to do some projects and make some money back before I spend anymore, lol. My wife works for a commercial HVAC company so I have her on the look out for Something used or a older unit that got upgraded. I think my biggest hurdle is sprinkler system.

Sounds like you are well on top of it. My friend was in a rural area as well but he had employees which might make a big difference. He did prep work for one of those companies that makes wood building replicas. All he did was cut the shape, paint the edges and sand the faces. The screen printing of the faces was done elsewhere. Since he had employees I think it probably made a big difference than if he would have been doing all the work himself. He was doing these things by the thousands. The paint room was part of a facility expansion to grow even further. Not too many years later the industry took a downturn and he had to lay off most of his employees. His son got involved in the film industry and since he was not of age, had to have a parent on set with him. He eventually closed up his business here and sold off what he couldn't move and ended up in California. I've lost track of him since. He found a job in a home center out there he patronized until he got on his feet again.

I do have employees but I think because it's not considered or zoned as commercial I haven't had to do a annual inspection. My insurance adjuster made a site visit when I first bought it and again when I made additions to the policy he made some suggestions that I have taken care of. My old boss told me after his rent when up many times and eventually closed the shop to make way for a new commercial development "if you ever get the chance have a shop on your property" this way you can walk out the back door and tinker in the after hours when your board. Well this has been harder to do than I thought, as insurance made some difficulties and so did the lender during our initial purchase. But who knows could get busted tomorrow! I'll do my best to make it safe. Heck we used to make a make shift booth in people basements or garage to spray cabinets,

Finally back at it after fighting that nasty flu going around. I ground the floor and applied a gray command paint from Benjamin Moore on the floor. All that's left is to caulk the baseboards to the floor and build filter housings.

I like where you are going with this, but will be remiss if I do not ask about the 20x20 filters, and whether they are rated for the products you are planning to use. It appears you have a semi correct filter material, but buying them in 20x20 cannot be cost effective. In other words, you might want to consider 100-500 foot rolls, then cut to fit as needed. If not, you cannot just use house type filters, as they do not filter down to the aerosol rating of a paint rated filter material. Other than that, keep up the great work.

Thanks but I'm really just aiming for a clean spray area and to minimize over spray. This is for painting cabinets and I only ever use latex or similar water based paints

Just have to paint the housings with the left over fire retardant paint, then top coat and I'll be spraying cabinets! Fun project but glad the finish line is in sight.

Perfect, then you should not have issues with the type of filter material I see. Just keep in mind, even low VOC paints still have VOC's that when breathed in, or allowed to be absorbed through your skin, can cause irreversible harm to your body. Again, a roll of filter material is going to be more cost effective than purchasing 20x20's every other time you spray out your projects. Just saying ;)

Great advice. Thank you. This will be very beneficial to someone doing a similar booth or following along with this thread. My wife works for a commercial HVAC company so I get the filters pretty cheap. My thought process was to use the blue filters as a pre filter in conjunction with 20x20 furnace filters(intake side only) to combat the sawdust the shop makes. That's the only reason I choose 20x20. But this could easily be modified

I use similar filters on my inflatable paint booth. While I know they won't filter out all the VOCs, my exhaust fan blows the output out of the shop and out across the field behind my house.

I'm wearing a full respirator and paint suit when spraying.

I'm sure if the EPA ever showed up while I was spraying, I'd be in trouble :/

My posts are for those that don't understand the safety factor, who may read these posts later on down the road, and think "well they did it, and I read it on the web, so it must be accurate"

Pre filtering is great, as it does lower the chance of particulate contamination within the finished product (nothing worse than dirt nibs). Exhaust wise, it's not only for your safety, but the safety of anyone else within a 100-150 foot radius.

Then why the explosion proof lights and fan? Pretty sure none of what you are spraying can cause a fire or explosion.
Technically I still have to build it as if I was. I'm still trying to build the booth to the best of my ability, understanding, and budget. Although the risk of fire with latex is non existent, insurance doesn't care. If I was to ever get caught (by fire Marshall) I'm hoping they would have me make minor changes rather than tear the whole booth down. I'm certain they wouldn't like the wood filter housings but I could fabricated those easily out of steel down the road. We have been painting a lot of interior doors, trim and cabinets black. Black is such a hard color to paint as it shows any flaws in the finish. I have around $2800.00 in materials and the cheapest booth I have found on marketplace was $8500.00 plus I'd have to cut the height down and refab a bunch of stuff like the doors because my ceiling height is only 8'.

Just a follow up, everything works great. We hooked up air for hvlp guns. But usually we use our airless. Here's Shane laying down some primer. All said and done it was worth the effort.

You have gone to a lot of effort to build a funtional (and pretty) spray area. If you are doing the work as a buisness, you need to keep the painting part low key. While your local insurance guy may be ok with it, if there was ever a fire or a workers comp claim, you are probably indefensible if the booth does not meet code. With that being said, I am like most of the guys on this forum. If I have to paint anything major, I have a temp booth that is not half as nice as yours. Good work... just protect your backside.
